I just finished watching Week 8. I know having the phone lines open at the beginning of the show has dampened the impact of the running order, but I noticed that Union J has been performing relatively early.

- Except for Week 6, they have been performing before Ella.
- They have been second to perform (the "real death slot" when lines opened after the show) thrice (including twice in a row: Weeks 4,5), first or second four times, among the first three five times (note that this is out of 8).
- They are, on average, called much earlier than everyone else.

REMARK: Until the last two weeks, Christopher is in "ridiculously early territory", too.

I wouldn't peg the impact of opening the phone lines at zero, but what is the impact of this?

Going on early is more of an advantage now, I think?

One thing I have noticed is that they've been trying everything with Chris. On early, on late, in the middle, sandwiched between two other popular acts, etc.

I think this year with the phone lines opening at the start it's more about which acts are around you than anything. If you're good and surrounded by a group of mediocre acts you're going to be remembered. (Perfect example of this is week 5, where Kye and Rylan were in the bottom two. They were around Union J and James who gave two good performances).

The order of performance shouldnt matter if they had a big enough voting fanbase. As it is, it doesn't look like many of their fans actually vote. They arent going to win even if put in a good slot.

Lines opening before the performances has thrown everything up into the air and it's fantastic. Much better than before when the 'death slot' (first) was usually an indicator as who was likely to drop into the bottom two. Running order doesn't have as much importance anymore.

One of the best changes they've made this series and I said from the start it would be a good idea.

About this, I've noticed this too... the last two times they've been safe they were called first and they've never really been kept waiting unless they were in the bottom two.

... but in the old system, won't going on early prevent those who want to vote based on performance or something? Running order is irrelevant at this stage, but there might be an impact early on. How would I know, I don't vote
