Would a civilian version of the show work?

I've always thought that one of the reasons that Survivor wasn't popular over was because the public had no part in deciding who left the show

Survivor was brilliant.I can't understand why it wasn't that popular.

Didn't they have to do a Gino in Survivor and kill living animals?

I think it's a good idea, I'd watch it. They could call it 'I'm not a celebrity, get me out of here'.

I never saw Survivor, it sounds like it was a good show.

bb 1 was good because it was an experiment, BB3 and most since are just desperate wannabes doing anything to get the limelight and a tv contract out of it getting more outrageous idiots in every year.

at least with the celebs they have to act with a degree of respect and do try to get along as their careers are in risk.

i personally prefer the celeb versions

They did try Survivor on ITV for two series - but dropped it because of bad ratings.

A real shame as the first series was really dramatic with real characters/nasty people - midway through it looked like all the decent contestants were finished and then by some miracle the nasty ones were defeated and good triumphed.

It was like Apprentice meets the jungle - but until the final there was no viewer vote merely the contestants vote off each other. So there was no scope for ITV to make money - or viewers to interact. It was probably a bit too 'intellectual' for the ITV audience.

I'm a Celeb was introduced in its place - but frankly is more lightweight/comic and allows a viewers vote nightly.

That was a show called "Castaway" ("Castaway 2007" to be exact; there was a previous series in 2000), and I really liked it as well; seems like it was longer ago (?longer ago?) than 2007 though...

It didn't seem as contrived as everything else generally does; the castaways were left to their own devices quite a bit (Jonathan isolated himself in a very real sense, for instance); there was a pretty good mix of people; they were left to survive without a whole lot of "gameshowy" tasks... just an interesting old-school reality experiment.

Would definitely like to see this show come back! Yes.

Another fan of Survivor here.

I really enjoyed it, the tasks were so much better than on IAC and I loved the strategising involved. I liked the fact that the public were not involved via a public vote and instead they voted each other off ... people were genuinely pitted against each other.

Weren't they also put into 2 teams at the start? The winning team then got to vote off someone from the other team?

I seem to have a memory that they had to strangle chickens, and one person was so enthusiastic that they pulled the head clean off . Though this could be a dream.

Another thing that sticks in my mind is a task where they had to hang from a bar for the longest time. One bloke got totally cocky and thought he had it in the bag against his opponent from the other team and started showing off to his watching team mates by doing pull-ups with a big grin on his face .... he then exhausted himself and let go, so the other team won. That was a sweet, sweet moment - he wasn't grinning then

Well there was a 7 year stretch between series 1 and 2 so... maybe they will bring us a Castaway 2014?

These things almost inevitably get ruined with too much success -- by the endless stock of professional producers also known as idiots who step into a successful thing to cash in and meddle and grind -- but it would be nice to see Castaway become one of the rare ones that doesn't get over-produced. It would be nice to see it stay just under the radar of said idiots enough to have maybe an every-other-year cycle... and entirely no interference from the "brilliant" minds of retooling tools.

Didn't they show that one year?

I seem to have a vague memory of them televising the test run with Australian civilians.

Castaway (the first series anyway, I didn't watch the other one) was great. And of course led to Ben Fogle becoming a TV presenter.

Weren't they all taken off the island on New Year's Eve, that's when the show finished?

The book is a very informative read.
