Freeview/Sky Regional news question
Hi all,
was not sure where to post this hope hear is fine. Basically its something I have noticed the since the digital switch over down here in Dorset in 2009. The bbc region on freeview is Southwest, but the region on Sky is South? anybody know why? and does anybody else have an anomaly like this? |

Freeview and Sky are two totally unconnected systems so there is zero correlation between what you see on one compared to the other. What version of BBC 1 (and ITV 1 for that matter) is determined on Freeview by which version is broadcast from the transmitter your aerial is pointing at.
On Sky it is slightly more complicated. Sky broadcasts to the entire country so carries every variant of BBC 1 and ITV 1. Which one you see by default is determined by what postcode you enter during set-up of the box and which variant of BBC 1 and ITV 1 is registered to that postcode. I would imagine from watching BBC 1 regional news here in Reading, Dorset should be getting the South region. So presumably Sky is correct. Which means you could be getting Freeview from a relay or even a main transmitter in the Southwest region. Which is not impossible depending on exactly where you are and which transmitter gives the best reception. On Sky it is possible to change what BBC/ITV region you see fairly easily. On Freeview it depends on whether there is a transmitter within range of your location that broadcasts the region you want to watch. |

I thought all the BBC regions were on a Sky box the same as they are on a Freesat box, you just need to use the right channel number.

They are. But the variant you get on channel 101 by default is set by setting a postcode. You can go off and find the others if you know where to look.

Hi namesake! The Freeview BBC region is dependent on the transmitter your aerial is pointed to whereas the Sky BBC region is set by the postcode of your Sky subscription address, which can therefore be more accurate. It is actually done to a resolution of post code minus the last two characters. Of course all the alternative BBC regions on Sky can be found in the 950s onwards.

Its easy to define which regional news you receive for satellite TV by postcode but you cannot tailor the Freeview transmitter coverage to match. Therefore towards the edge of a region the satellite postcode may give you one region but the local Freeview transmitter may give you a different region.
About 10 years ago north Gloucestershire was redefined as part of West region so our local news comes from Bristol and this is what you get if you put your postcode into a satellite receiver. However the local Freeview transmitter at Ridge Hill broadcasts BBC Midlands and ITV Central but their local news does not cover this area. For most people in the area the West region Mendip Freeview transmitter is not receivable because of hills in the way. This probably accounts for the fact that the majority of houses around here now have a satellite dish or cable TV so the can see their local news. |
