I think it was their treat, so it was ok for them to eat it. But I did notice that Hugo hesitated, and Ashley didn't.

No, but I didn't see it as gloating - he didn't know at that stage that Charlie had missed out on seeing her child, and when they found out, I saw him put his arm out to comfort her.
So I don't think he was being mean, it's just the joke didn't really make me laugh.
