Sold my laserdisc of this years ago in anticipation of a rumoured DVD release that never happened. Mystifying as to why it’s never been released.

A fantastic film with one of Tangerine Dream’s best ever scores.

You had the LD. I thought Mann was sort of not happy about how the film turned out or was cut.
In the lead up to the LD release there was talk that director would be involved but that came to nothing.

VHS and LD - Love the film which is why it was gutting to flog the laserdisc and come to realise after that the promised DVD wasn’t going to happen. IIRC Mann was supposed to be doing a director’s cut for that DVD but there was bugger all mentioned after the initial rumours. If memory serves it was even available to pre-order at Canadian DVD etailer DVDSoon, before they absconded with customers money. They were practically giving DVDs away for a long time so it’s hardly surprising that business model came crashing down!

I’ll be glued to Film4 tonight as it must be ten years+ since I last saw it.

Terrible print. Awful sound and much more choppy than I remembered it. It’s clear there are big chunks missing, either unfilmed or cut out in an attempt to quicken the pace.

Despite all that it still has a wonderfully weird atmosphere and the golem monster stands up well even in this age of CGI.

Ian McKellan - Hang your head in shame for that bloody awful accent!

Watched this several times and still can't see what all the 'cult' fuss is about. At best it's a very mediocre effort, and I can't see reinstatement of any of the missing bits would elevate much. Interesting but ultimately not really very good.

So the print wasn't very good?, it's on my PVR to watch later.

I've read that it's also in "cropped" 4:3??

Recorded it last night on Film 4 SD. Had a quick peek. Looked fine to me. Seen much worse looking films for the age. It was in 2.35:1 I think, or something approaching that.

I've never seen it before, but a friend recommended it ages ago. Looking forward to watching it. Had a very interesting opening!

I recorded this last night. Hopefully it's good. If its got Ian Mckelkan in it it can't be all bad.

It's one of those films, that if Paramount hadn't fired Michael Mann due to going over budget, might be his masterpiece.

What we do have is superb cinematography & generally an excellent movie.

It's obvious that the studio hacked it to pieces, but there is still a lot to enjoy

I stayed up to watch it and it wasn't worth the effort. Apart from the cinematography it didn't have much going for it at all - and I love Michael Mann's movies.

A fairly disjointed mess with Tangerine Dream's music often seeming out of place (and I like TD) and a leading lady whose apearance just screamed 80s to me - the hair, make-up and general acting just didn't suggest someone who was living in 1941.

Somewhere in it was a good movie, maybe it's a film that would benefit from the remake treatment.

Apparently the TD score was re-edited again by the studio (& yes at times is seems out of place)

Look again - It was horrible PQ. Hairs in the gate at several points for instance.

....

Apparently Mann’s original cut was 180 minutes long which explains why it’s all over the place in this truncated version.

No, his masterpiece was on before it - Heat.

You can sometimes understand when studios intervene on their investment: to stop even more money being wasted on such terrible films, presumably. And I too doubt any amount of additional material could salvage this wreck.

I suppose its bizarrely heightened status is down to the usual suspects - those who get all misty-eyed over the whole eighties 'sci-fi/horror/fantasy' thing and allow sentimentality too much leeway. Once in a while they dig up a gem, but poring and fawning over ropey old twaddle seems to be the default setting.

Heat was a big budget remake of his tv movie LA Takedown.

As good as Heat is.......
