I just had to rewind...did Rosemary say seeing David was like seeing a monkey? I couldn't quite understand what she said...

Yup, they've glossed over it so far, hopefully it won't become one of those tiresome tabloid controversies.

I think Rosemary is just a bit oblivious, sure she isn't aware of the offensive connotations.

It was clearly his physique not his colour that made her say that.

I'm certain she wouldn't have meant it to be a racist remark.

So has nobody ever called someone "a little monkey" - either because they're mischievous, funny or just plain irresistible - all of which apply to the adorable Mr. Haye.

Awkward moment to say the least, clearly she didn't engage her brain when she said that!

I have just rewound it and yes she did say that. She was referring to his physique.

Had she said it about Hugo no-one would bat an eyelid.

Yes I have......but I suppose referring to David as that may seem unacceptable, dare I say because of his colour not necessarily his physique.

It could be taken as offensive. I suppose it's a delicate point really.

Probably not, but it will cause an uproar thats for sure, hence my didn't engage her brain comment. Had she then she'd have realised the PC brigade would be out in force and another choice would've been better.

Is it not the PCers themselves who have issues with race if they are the ones associating black people with monkeys?

Where I live it is a term of endearment - it has nothing to do with race or colour. The meaning of it is - someone who is cute to look at and is totally mischeivious, and a delight to be around. I am not a fan of Rosemary - but I do understand exactly what she means.

Most people are aware of the potential connotations associated with those choice of words. Being socially aware doesn't mean people have issues. For the record I'm not in the brigade.

^ This.

She clearly didnt mean anything racial when she said it, so why try to make it so?

I'm sorry but it does when you try to make something out of it when it was obviously not meant that way. Deliberately taking something out of context or apply a different meaning to what someone clearly meant, and making a deal of it is a little bit wiered I think.
