Why should itv2 make one ? They could make rosemary make one to clarify what she meant.
The reason why ITV2 should nake one is they are responsible for everything they broadcast and they have a duty of care under OFCOM rules.

Oh my giddy aunt now rosemary could do with reading this thread to see what she can and can't say. Why do you keep refering to rosemary as from that era is that not biased towards her age?
I was answering a post that mentioned what era she was from and said I too was from that era . ? Gosh whats the issue with that now ? I have no clue what you mean by biased about her and my age ??Do you think I am biased towards myself ?
I give up now ,. I am attempting a debate about how we all have to move on and learn .

What rules have been broken?

Afraid you will have to do your own homework on that.

However by way of a steer in big brother earlier this year there was a similar incident whereby a white girl called a black man a gorilla

OFCOM were notified of the incident. There is a thread here

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...ighlight=ofcom

that includes a link to the OFCOM findings. In short in that incident they upheld there was no breach of OFCOM rules because there was careful evaluation of the material before transmission and the matter was dealt with in the episode shown.

However in this current incident the remark was just swept under the carpet and it will be interesting to see if ITV2 comment on it as the way it is broadcast is in breach of OFCOM guidelines - which are available in full on their website.

I agree rosemary comes from a generation where off the cuff comments were par for the course in some circles to describe someones colour or creed but I dnt agree she should have to watch every thing she says incase its misunderstood. Perhaps next time she will refer to him as a big giant or bear lol

I'm just going with good old fashioned common sense on this one if we are going to bring out the rule book for every off the cuff remark the show and others will soon go dwn hill I'm afraid.

When did the debate move on to a discussion about whether 'every off the cuff remark' should be scrutinised ?

This thread is about whether or not refering to a black man looking like a monkey, is acceptable

Fair enough.

You asked the question and I answered it.

IMO taking a lackadaisical approach to the implementation of the rules will quickly bring the whole system into disrepute - which is very much what some people would like. Oh well .....

Thank you for the link. It was interesting to read the Ofcom report and to see how they go about making their decisions. One phrase that stood out with regard to Caroline's gorilla comment was "that even without racist intent, such comments had a substantial potential to offend."

Whilst I do not think Rosemary was being racist it was an extremely insensitive thing for her to say.
Calling black people 'monkey' and making monkey like noises and gestures have long been used to taunt and abuse black people and I know because I got a lot of it at school. I think David will not be bothered by it and just laugh. I would be interested to know how his mum feels though.

I see the remark has NOT been edited out of the programme on the ITV player where she is most definitely comparing him to a monkey.

Yes of course it goes back to a time when people were openly racist. It wasn't right then and it isn't right now but it happened though didn't it? Mercifully the world has come some way in addressing these issues.
Although less common, white monkeys also exist, so as usual it's rooted in ignorance and hate, hate and ignorance -but not in Rosemary's case.
It may not have come from a place of hate on Rosemary's part, but would it not be fair to say that it came from a place of ignorance?

It's nothing to do with this day and age.
Associating black people with monkeys has gone back to when black people were first brought over as slaves to the UK and the USA and goes as far back to the 'good old days' of racism.
I agree.

The vile chanting and 'gestures' in the Football stadiums of late, tell us all who they are referring to.

I just watched it on Demand here in Ireland and its still there too . Definetly a matter of opening her mouth before engaging her brain and a daft thing to say . I think Laura was lost for words and just said " moving on now from there " and fanned herself
Rosemary was hyper like a child and in full flow and looked oblivious to what she had said . I am sure no malice at all was intended but boy was it daft and silly .

I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure David would laugh it off, he doesn't seem particularly thin skinned and I'm sure he would understand that Rosemary didn't mean anything by it. His mum might have been slightly taken aback to hear it though. I assume someone will have had a quiet word with Rosemary about it and that she would have apologised to Davids family if there was any hint she might have caused offence.

As soon as she said it I thought "oh dear". I'm sure she meant no offence at all but unfortunately in this day and age people have been in trouble for similar. Look at the sports people recently.
Also didn't Carol Thatcher get removed from The One Show for a similar innocent remark?

Rosemary's remark probably was innocent.
But Carol Thatcher's comments most definitely weren't.

I wish people wouldn't lump both examples together into the same boat.
Both completely separate and both completely different contexts.

I don't see the distinction you are trying to make

Carol T said of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga "He looks like a golliw**"

Rosemary said of David Haye "Once I saw him coming through the jungle like this em monkey ...."

How is what Rosemary said less offensive than what Carol T said ?

What did Carol Thatcher say?
She and some others were talking about the Australian Open that year, and the black French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was beaten and eliminated from the competition.

Here's an article that speaks about what was supposedly said:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...wog-gaffe.html

Just dug up some article where Jo-Wilfried's mum says something about it...

Notice the article you have included does not include the words you have ascribed to Carol T . That is because your assertion is wrong

I think it could be said that Rosemary was trying to speak of David Haye in endearing terms.
Carol Thatcher was speaking in a derogative way.

likening someone to a monkey doesn't necessarily have to indicate they're black ... ie I think Wayne Rooney is like a monkey and lot's of muscular men black or white have a gait/stance that is monkeylike

On the othe rhand gollywog is obviously black specific

It wasn't a wise analogy for Rosemary to use but I don't think she meant it in a racist way
