^ This.

She clearly didnt mean anything racial when she said it, so why try to make it so?

I'm sorry but it does when you try to make something out of it when it was obviously not meant that way. Deliberately taking something out of context and making a deal of it is a little bit wiered I think.
I think you'll find my original post was acknowledging that others may well have a problem with it. I never said I did.

No but it can often create issues where non exist.
I agree, which is something Rosemary should also be aware of.

Most people are aware of the potential connotations associated with those choice of words. Being socially aware doesn't mean people have issues. For the record I'm not in the brigade.
I agree with you , I am not in any brigade but being the same age as Rosemary am very aware of what is acceptable and what is not . She simply should have known better .I am sure no malice was intended , but it was thoughtless and she barges ahead when she should think before the speaks

Yes it can create a hoohar when there was none intended I quite agree.

Someone told my daughter off for saying 'come on then my lovely bunch of coconuts'

Apparently you aren't allowed to say that.........she didn't know, I didn't know either. It seems you have to be very careful these days. An innocent remark can be taken out of context.

Perhaps the PCers ought to be a little more judicious also.

Le't recap, just so we understand what the objection here is

Rosemary recalled, that, on seeing a black man in the jungle, she thought it was a monkey

I don't really care whether she 'meant' it in a racist way or not .... it is unacceptable

and she had the cheek to constantly berate Hugo for 'not listening'

Where I live it is a term of endearment - it has nothing to do with race or colour. The meaning of it is - someone who is cute to look at and is totally mischeivious, and a delight to be around. I am not a fan of Rosemary - but I do understand exactly what she means.
It wasnt in that context , she was talking on seeing him walk out of the jungle into camp

I would assume the programme is broadcast with a time delay - had the producers thought the comment was offensive in any way they could have cut it out or dubbed over it. She very obviously didn't mean any offence & was speaking about David in a good way.

So has nobody ever called someone "a little monkey" - either because they're mischievous, funny or just plain irresistible - all of which apply to the adorable Mr. Haye.
Thank you...'little monkey'...I couldn't make it out. I'm assuming she meant little monkey in a cheeky kind of way. Hopefully it wont get misinterpreted.

I don't believe she would mean to be offensive.

I don't think for a second she saw "a black man" - she saw a personality, thank heavens.

You need to go watch it again because Rosemary didn't say that at all, I expect to read your apology in a bit....

But isnt it about how it is perceived? Its all well and good saying no offence was meant.

I am of her generation .There are words we used way back then that were not intended to be offensive but are now considered offensive ,. I would not dream of using those words now as I am very aware of it and how it could be hurtful . I may not intend offence but I still know very well not to use those words .,
Her not intending offence is most likely the case .But she was thoughlless and silly and lacked awareness IMO

That's a pretty broad interpretation.
As the OP , I just wanted clarification on what she said, I caught the monkey but not 'little monkey'...in the context of the conversation about how she thought he was a hunk & phwoar I dont believe she was being offensive

Trouble with that is that some people actively seek out offence and others, like David I suspect, don't.

She should not of said it however it was meant. She did not like Eric going on about her weight so you would think she would take more care in what she says.
