I am a Rosemary fan but I thought it was a oh oh moment when she said it. I dont believe it was in any way an intentionally racial statement but it grated with me. I thought there was a pregnant moment.

Is it not the PCers themselves who have issues with race if they are the ones associating black people with monkeys?
Nail on head.

Can anyone recall the exact phrasing she used?
'And David, may I tell you? I have to just say this live on television'

'I am scared, about what you're going to say'

'David is such a hunk'

'We know that'

'I am a middle aged lady, and I'll tell you, once I saw him coming through the jungle, like this, like this (holds her arms out) like a little monkey, a lovely, and he looked so fit, and I thought, you know, this is terrific, this is fabulous'

Thanks for that.

Le't recap, just so we understand what the objection here is

Rosemary recalled, that, on seeing a black man in the jungle, she thought it was a monkey

I don't really care whether she 'meant' it in a racist way or not .... it is unacceptable
Is that exactly what she said then? I think we need to be careful here.

The thing is its not any brigade who make th association its people who are informed and aware who know its not acceptable . I am in no brigade and am well aware that people need to chill out when it comes to racism , but I am very aware of what is acceptable and what is not .,
I would never use a word that could be in any way misinterpreted or hurtful to anyone
Rosemary mistake here is her barging ahead with thinking

I have just typed what she said, but just before the word 'monkey' she said something else that I can't make out. It sounded like 'onwards'

And who exactly do you think has decreed what is not acceptable?

Her comment wasn't referring to race at all so she wasn't in the wrong and it's only going to be seen as offensive if people kick up a fuss for the sake of it.

This very issue was hotly debated on the BB forum last series, when Caroline made a remark about Adam being like a gorilla. She was taken to task in the Diary Room for it, and made to apologise.

Even though everyone here is in agreement that Rosemary wasn't being remotely racist. Which raises the question, why is this even an issue?

It wasnt in that context , she was talking on seeing him walk out of the jungle into camp
Ok then lets take this further. Lets just say this was a programme filmed in the North Pole. I came back to camp from a trial and someone commented that I looked like a polar bear. Would I be upset - hmmmmmmmmmmmm no. Insults can be found anywhere if your look for it.

I think she said 'with his arms out like a little monkey', not 100% sure though.

Well, in an effort to be careful, I'll be more exact

Rosemary said ( verbatim ) "Once, I saw him coming through the jungle , like this ...like this almost little monkey" ... followed by a guffaw of laughter

I am not looking for them ,I just would know better not to use that language , simple as .I didnt make up the PC words or Non PC words .I simply know they are there and I know not to use them

I can't help but think we'd all be a lot better off if we just made decisions based on what we feel is correct instead of being conditioned to make daft knee jerk reactions out of fear.

to me it sounded like "like this almost monkey" ... said with arm movements that seemed to be an impression of a monkey

to me she was obviously likening him physically to a monkey but seemed oblivious to the racial connotation of doing so as if it was more his physical/muscular stance than his race

Some posters earlier on in the thread were predictably 'outraged' by her comment.
I made a comment about the PC brigade, another poster latched onto it asking were they not the ones with issues?
The poster you've quoted in an earlier post has stated she didn't find Rosemary racist but its society who deem such comments unacceptable and she is aware enough not to use them for that reason.
I don't think it is an issue, especially now context has been provided.
