yes i know, jesus christ this world is going mad.

OP she adores David she thinks hes a hunk she wants him to win, i can safely say she meant no offence when she said it, she speaks as fast as a bloody road runner and doesnt always think before she speaks, plus shes on the older side of 50 so may not be up to date with the pc ness of this world. Give the woman a break.

Had a 22 year old who didnt like david say it then yes i would of had concerns myself, but i just smiled and though "oops she shouldnt of said that cause their gonna tear you apart" but she has no idea. when someone does point out what she said im sure she will be mortified but jesus it was an innocent comment said by someone who adores the guy id hardly hang her for it.

Words do become unacceptable in certain contexts over time. Not many people would be happy calling a cerebral palsy sufferer a spastic nowadays, because the word has been abused so much.

Yes, I agree!

I honestly don't think Rosemary meant any harm at all. I think she could have chosen another way to describe David given the term could be taken out of context.

I think it was a case of foot and mouth. She opened her mouth and could have unintentionally shoved her foot in it.

Unfortunately these days there are terms that were once used that now are unacceptable.

It wasn't racist, but it was certainly ignorant. A woman of her age should be socially aware enough to understand the connotations.

I think she is so caught up in the limelight, she does not engage her brain. Also she finds it hard to admit she may have made any kind of error in anything she says or does. Unless she may be told to by the production team. Saying that I don't think she meant to be malicious.

Not too sure that Rosemary's world would encompass this, or that she would understand the "connotations" any more than she would understand the appeal of lyrics about women (whores) gay people (battymen) or Afro-American-Caribbean people (n******) and often featuring violence. Funny old world, isn't it?

I'm speaking to the minority who are hell bent on making this an argument about what can and can't be said incase it offends anyone.

I think it's interesting to debate what is and isn't acceptable language. I don't see it as an argument at all.

Its only being debated because people here the word monkey and asume its meant as offensive had david called rosemary it we wouldn't be debating about it.

Me neither. Unfortunately like it or not, we do have to watch our p's and q's at times, it's how it is these days.

The vast majority of the posts on here see it as more of an unfortunate slip up, myself for one. I don't think there's intentional malice at all. Thank goodness it was Rosemary that said that and not perhaps Eric, otherwise this forum would explode LOL!

No, I'm not saying it would be more acceptable for Rosemary to say it as opposed to Eric, but I do wonder sometimes if someone, that some could say is more likable than another, gets away with more, If you catch my drift.

I just find it sad this day and age a lady who is speaking about someone she grew close to has to watch what she says incase its conceived as offensive. I agree though had eric said this a lot of people would have lambasted him for it.

Agreed - she's just from that place and time where they're just not a PC-switched on as needed in this day and age.

Ian Dury would no doubt have something to say about this.
Lenny Bruce had more to say about words than anybody, but I doubt many people remember any of it.

Likening black people to monkeys or apes has always been problematic.
Are you saying that these days it's wrong but back in the old days it was acceptable?

It's nothing to do with this day and age.
Associating black people with monkeys has gone back to when black people were first brought over as slaves to the UK and the USA and goes as far back to the 'good old days' of racism.

Its never acceptable to call any coloured person a monkey but I honestly believe in rosemarys case it was more about davids size than colour.
