The UK Fish & Chip Index!
It appears that the days of a cheap takeway are long gone. Chippies near me (Edinburgh) are all charging about £1.80 for a regular sized bag of chips and £6.50 for Haddock and Chips. It would be interesting to know how this compares with other parts of the country?

Local chipper sells small fish and chips for 3.30
That's a lot cheaper than a mickey mouse mcdonalds extra value meal |

Chip shops are pricing themselves out of the game.
Most people are buying Birds Eye fish.Trayful of oven chips.Job done for half the price.Pizza places are going the same way. |

I'd be more interested in the quality than the price.

One near us does lunchtime deals - small F&C for £2, normal for £3 and large for £4; As a fat 4x year old bloke I can honestly say a small is perfect for lunch.
Chippy around the corner does some stupidly priced F&C for the last-order brigade. Many people complain about his prices but he's run the same shop for... dunno... 40+ years. The shop is a local navigation mark ('turn left when you get to Umberto's") |

Yes.I find Birds Eye Cod in batter and a trayful of Tescos Finest oven chips are just as good(if not better) than anything from my local chippy.
Your local chippy must be dire . I cant see how a birds eye fish & oven chips come close to a real chippy serving.

Chips in our local chippy are £1 but a fish is £4.70 for a cod or haddock or £5.40 for a large fish. So minimum £5.70 for fish and chips. Too expensive.

Cod or haddock and chips (very large portions, you really can share one between two people) are £5
Now to me that seems a good deal no cooking at home, no washing up if you eat out the paper and miles better than oven chips. Oh and if I ring them and tell them before I go to get them they put me a vegetable pie to heat. Lovely people really hope they stay in the village for many years but they keep talking about going back to Hong Kong

This thread is pointless if people are going to just put "Round here, fish and chips cost £x"
Where do you live ?? ![]() I don't want your address, just your area ! ![]() I live in Birkenhead, and a fish cost £2.40 and chips cost £1.20 |

If you get the Asda frozen battered haddock, defrost and then deep fry it, some maris piper chips and frozen mushy peas it's pretty close to chippy quality.

There are about 3 or 4 chippies that I use. Which I use will depend on location and they type of fish & chips they do. Some have extra cripsy batter, some have more soggyish. Some have chunky chips, some have thinner ones. Also price comes in.
In most of them Half lot = £2.50 / £2.80 A half lot is supposed to be a small fish and chips but believe me the portions they give can easily fill an adult. Some even throw in a tub of peas/gravy/curry for free in a "splash" deal. On the cost they are more expensive as I guess that's were they get some tourists and families on days out. |

5.50 for a large cod and chips near me, but the size of a large cod has shrunk over the years...
