In most of them
Half lot = £2.50 / £2.80
A half lot is supposed to be a small fish and chips but believe me the portions they give can easily fill an adult. Some even throw in a tub of peas/gravy/curry for free in a "splash" deal.

On the cost they are more expensive as I guess that's were they get some tourists and families on days out.”

We don't get half lots here in Brighton - we are getting ripped off though all the time. I complained at the chippy here when I received a measly portion of chips - the girl refused to add some chips so I told them to give me my money back and walked out.

The saver potatoes are looking more like peas now. I've mainly given up on chips and am now boiling or baking them.

The best chippy near me does fish, chips, peas, a slice of bread and butter and a drink - eat in for £5.95. They do a lovely home made tartare sauce to which is to die for. I'm not sure how much it is to take away. It is really nice in there too.

To be fair, Haddock costs a hell of a lot more than a pie.

How could you possibly know that 'most people' are doing this?

Plus your local chippies must be pretty bad if oven chips and a Birds Eye fish are an adequate replacement.

The Asda 'chosen by you' frozen Haddock in batter is a very good substitute if gently defrosted in the microwave and then deep fried.

Only £2 for 4 fillets as well. Two stage fry some maris piper chips and simmer some Lockwoods frozen mushy peas for around 25 mins and you have a very good chippy alternative for around a quid.

Some reason Chinese or in our case Hong Kong born fish and chips fryers are often better than any other. Try it you may be surprised.

it's about 5 pounds for a haddock and chips where i live. you can get cheaper meals though.
and to be honest the fish is usualy over cooked to point where it's chewy. i'd rather have my mum's homemade fish and chips.which is really nice, well cooked and the chips are crispy.

The chinese around here cook fish and chips in the same oil as everything else and it stinks, batter is also tasteless.
I like good fish and chips and travel all over england to find them.
The best are in yorkshire where they still cook in dripping.
Maggies in hastings is also a well kept secret, where you need to book a week in advance to try her fish and chips.

Chinese chips are lovely. Not the same as chippy chips though and i've never had battered fish from a Chinese.

Saying that though one of the local chippies I do go to is owned/run by a Chinese/Oriental guy and it's good stuff. He took it over a few years back and the quality/type hasn't changed.

Not really. The majority of cod & haddock is caught in the upper North Sea and is flash frozen on the ship.

It is distribued frozen so wherever you are in the country you'd be getting the same quality.

In any case that's not what I mean.
I live in a costal town. Chippies just outside of the town centre have the best prices.

On the coast road there are about half a dozen chippies and they are in general more expensive and less generous portions. As I say, they'll be making money from day visitors.

Castleford west Yorkshire

£1.25 bag of chips
£2.60 a regular fish (usually cod)

£7.50 near me.

It is a huge portion though, so usually I can either just eat the chips or just the fish.
