There are a few fans of sighthounds here. I had a lurcher (sighthound cross) and I love pointy dogs! If you do a search you'll find a couple of threads about greys but I'm sure we'll be happy to chat on this one.

Yep, we have a recycled racer too. He's a big lumbering idiot but I love him!!

Mines is curled up on the couch right now. I did a bit of match making at the weekend and got a small blue called Rory matched up with a very loving new home. I love your description "pointy dogs" Aaarghawasp!. We call them that as well!

ETA I used to love the dog racing and was a frequent visitor to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh before they pulled it down. Now I know the horrible things that can happen to ex racers, I don't think I'd feel comfortable supporting the racing industry anymore. But that's just me...

I dont think any of us who have these dogs as part of our family can be comfortable with what goes on. I have never seen a dog race in my life because I hated the thought of it and that was before we had the hound who seems to have taken over every piece of furniture in the house!!

Didnt like it to be honest, but I hate all things racing industry related.

^^ same here JJ in light of what I now know.

Our old boy will be 12 in january, had him almost 2 years now, he never did much racing although he has the "ear tattoos" which i used to research his history. Whoever had him before us used him for going hunting/shooting- no doubt about it. If i say i'm going to work he leaps up, pass a 4x4 vehicle out walking and he tries to get in it! We got him from an SPCA animal home as nobody wanted him. (unbelievable) What a joy he has been, like a 2-yr old puppy at times, he has found a new lease of life despite having severe Arthritis in his Hips. We love him to bits and are now hooked on these gentle,elegant dogs

We've had our big boy for six years now. He takes his retirement very seriously and does very little with his time! He sleeps all night and almost all day and wants nothing more than a bed, two meals a day and cuddles. He lives with two cat companions (they all ignore each other really) and we just feel privileged to have found him and been able to share our home with him.

Urrmm not really. The video in my opinion seemed to be endorsing the racing industry. I have been told of way too many horror stories, for it ever to be ok. Sorry but it just didnt sit right with me.

I do love some of the other crazy groundhound clips on youtube though.

I won't condone the racing industry either. This is the only kind of racing I enjoy - a fundraiser for Lurcher Link rescue. Mostly rescue lurchers but all kinds of sighthounds from Afghans to whippets, greys to salukis and even a couple of deerhounds. All in good fun.

Have had two Greyhounds and three Lurchers, wonderful dogs.
Got an elderly Lurcher at the moment, she is ok but getting a little slow now.
Not quite sure how old she is but probably about 12/13.
She has a slight leaking problem, typical as she is is a spade bitch but on medication which seems to be helping.

Aarghawasp! - I've seen similar 'races' on the straight - love sight hounds but I'm not convinced they are blessed with an abundance of brains - they make it up with the brawn and that wriggly back thing they do - 'roaching'?

Very even tempered in my experience - done a few car runs with one in the back to some rescue or kennel or other and you'd not know they were there. Brilliant with people. I know they have a reputation with small furries, but I've known many fine with small dogs and even cats.

Definitely a dog I would consider adopting when the time is right.

I think their intelligence is overridden by the instinct to RUUUUUUUUN! Seamus was a collie x lurcher, pretty clever but absolutely mental when you let him off lead to run. Roaching seems to be a common sighthound trait. He was fine with our cat, it seems to be a very individual thing. Some are just too risky around small furries, others curl up and sleep with cats and even bunnies.
