It really winds me up the way people like her act in a way that really gets people's backs up... and then flatly deny it and play the victim. Too insecure to take a long, hard look at themselves from the outside...

Oh and by the way, Rosemary - you earn respect, it's not just doled out free like the rice and beans...

Agree, she was bossy and controlling, especially with Hugo.

Thats mainly because she was bossy and controlling I suppose .

She would be a nightmare to be around - and I have a feeling that what we saw was probably the toned-down version.

Rosemary is a product of both her time and her experiences in life - she has a 'oh, let's just get on with it' attitude (which is actually an advantage in some situations!) and yes she is a bit 'jolly hockey sticks' and isn't backwards in coming forwards, but that doesn't make her a bad person!

Like Eric, she speaks as she finds - neither have exactly covered themselves in glory sometimes, but then the situation they've been/are in hardly lends itself to that! She isn't a saint, but then no one is - but there are far worse examples of a human being I can think of, and Rosemary isn't unaware of her faults - far from it - but she is a bit 'set in her ways' (as you would expect in someone of her age who's had to make her own way in life for so long to provide for her family on her own) and used to living her life independently of others. That seems to have rubbed some people up the wrong way, but I'd still have her 'on my side' if I needed someone to rely on in a crisis!

ETA I hadn't read the interview before I posted - but Rosemary seems to say a lot of things about herself that I pointed out, so I'm happy with what I've written and I'd still have her on my side!

I always find this slightly odd. Do people need to earn someone's respect ? If this were the case, we wouldn't have any respect for people we had only just met.

I normally find that I have respect for everyone - and then as I get to know them, the respect either remains, increases or is lost.

I don't start off saying 'I've got no respect for you, let's see if you can earn it'

I agree completely with this! Everyone deserves respect, until such time as they do something to lose it! Admiration is earned, but respect is something everyone is due!

I agree with you. I've always thought it is a silly thing to say.

I respect every man, woman and child on the planet unless they give me a reason not to.

I think that this is where Rosemary gets it wrong. She thinks that people should respect her for her age, that being older makes you automatically better and you should never be questioned on your own behaviour.

No, she hadn't! They all ate it, they just blamed her for not rationing it!

That I agree with too .Everyone has my respect till they loose it for some reason .But age or experience does not automatically qualify anyone .

Well I would hope Rosemary would tell those people exactly where to go.

She seems nice enough, just don't think I could deal with her in large doses.

I think she just didn't like him disagreeing with her in any way because he's a) younger and b) from a privileged background. It's annoying when people think that just because they're older they're always in the 'right' and can dictate 'manners' to everyone else.

I have met/known old fashioned/older generation people and in their day bossy,controlling and undermining people meant the same thing. People on this forum excuse rosemarys behaviour on old fashioned quirks and its bullshite.
