She is as much part of EastEnders as the Queen Vic and jellied eels.

And in news which will have EastEnders fans jumping for joy Dot Cotton is set to return to the soap just in time for this year's explosive Christmas episode.

June Brown, who has played Dot since 1985, took a sabbatical and has been writing her memoirs and filming BBC documentary Respect Your Elders.

And June has been filming with Lorna Fitzgerald who plays Abi in emotional scenes set to be broadcast.

'Dot is one of EastEnders' best loved characters and Albert Square hasn't been the same without her," executive producer Lorraine Newman said.

Abi, whose grandfather Jim married Dot, seems to go a hunt for her gran and in scenes set to be broadcast over Christmas the pair have a tearful reunion.

Abi is seen waiting at a bus stop before going into what looks like a school to hand Dot her gift.

Viewers are left wondering if Dot is working or volunteering.
As the pair embrace Abi suddenly leaves, with viewers wondering of she will ever set foot in the square again.

Dot is one of the few current characters who has appeared in the show since in began winning a Bafta nomination in 2009 for an episode which was her recording an emotional message for her husband Jim as he recovered from a stroke

Thanks
Looks like a lovely return. Nice to see Abi and Dot bond and have a grandma/granddaughter relationship.

LOL I see the Daily Mail journalism is at its usual high quality. Why don't they check before they put articles on their website?. Also, I'm sure Dot wasn't actually in EE at the beginning. I think she joined after a few months?

I was more confused to see that Sharon is re-marrying her ex fiance Phil Did I miss something.

Lovely pictures of Dot and Abi.

Well with Dot being a Branning I'm sure they'll have lots of scenes together.

Fantastic June is the EastEnders ultimate LEGEND for me. I never mind actors staying with long-running shows if they have the talent, which June certainly does!

Wonder what Dot's been up to, and what she's doing in a building that looks like a school. How did Abi know where she'd be?

I don't know if you've heard of the modern contraption that is called a telphone. It allows you to speak to someone who is far away! It's quite impressive!

Didn't think Dot had been in touch with anyone, TBH. They all seem quite self-involved.

Truth be told, she could disappear and none of them would bat an eyelid.

Truth be told, I've missed her more than pretty much any character on a break. Except Janine, that is.

Same. Seeing people like Poppy or Cora in her house without her there has been weird. She is part of the furniture.

Missed Janine as well.

Lucy said Ian was staying with Dot. couple of weeks ago, so why Abi has to go on some vision quest to track her down is a bit odd...

Looking forward to Dot and Sharon seeing each other again.

I wonder if Rose will be returning as well as she left to go and stay with Dot.

This is going to be part of a red button special which will air in week 1.

'Dorothy Branning: The Next Chapter'. Why has she stayed away from Walford for so long? Why won't she come home? We're about to find out when Abi Branning leaves the East End on a mission to seek out her Grandma Dot
