You are correct it is the homage to the OYH video. The Mr Bell refers to one of her lines in WTG film, I was trying to make a joke but I have confused you, sorry!
Re: the grammy performance, I thought M sounded really good but some people have deemed her terrible! Was I watching/listening to a different Madonna to everyone else? And IMO i loved both clothing styels she wore....i loved the allusion to OYH video and the Erotica era...adore gender bending anyway...love it when M does it...she is very masculine and cool anyway and she makes it work so much...it is beautiful! and hope she experiments more with these styles...i do envisag her moulding Sci-Fi/Warrior styles with sophisti looks like this ...would be ebautiful and potentially an iconic reinvention too...anyways. Dreaming and drifting on...just makes me really want her to use her raw vocals on recording for the next album...get Orbit, Leoanrd and Blood Orange united...have Daft Punk on a few sonvs too...really make a Bluesy/Mid-Tempo/Psychy album. |

Re: the grammy performance, I thought M sounded really good but some people have deemed her terrible! Was I watching/listening to a different Madonna to everyone else? it could have been worse though, you could have mentioned mr wasey. the look she was going for wouldn't have looked right had rocco been there towering over her.![]() i think she sounded ok, good even in places, but its madonna ffs and not celine dion. what were these people honestly expecting? i predicted that some people would crawl out the woodwork and have a good b^^ch, so i wasn't surprised. i guess some people may call it karma for the constructive criticisms madonna fans have dished out to their faves over the past year, but whatever. what goes around will no doubt come back around again when the opportunity presents itself. ![]() madonna never can win with some people. she turns up somewhere under dressed and people moan for her to cover up, so she turns up fully clothed and people still moan. people say her hands look old, so she covers them up and then people moan about her face. if she mimes, there's outrage and then if she sings live, these people still think she's crap. like i said yesterday, it makes no odds to me, i wont change the way i feel about her or effect me at all other than feeling mildly amused at the predictability of some. different strokes and all that.

Re: the grammy performance, I thought M sounded really good but some people have deemed her terrible! Was I watching/listening to a different Madonna to everyone else? I think she always sounds great when she's standing still like in this performance or Masterpiece on the last tour. The only time to me she can sound off is when she's doing a lot of dancing. I love the energy of the dancing in her shows, don't get me wrong. But sometimes I do wish she could maybe tone it down a little bit, so she could really show what a great singer she is. |

i loved "masterpiece" on the mdna tour, such a heartfelt and strong performance from her. dancing is very much part of her shows and i wouldn't want her to compromise her performance for credibility reasons. if she stood still for 2 hours and give the vocal performance of her life, some people would still pick holes in her singing. unfortunately, that is the mindset of her critics, but she doesn't go on tour or make music for these people anyway.
the undeniable fact is she has had an amazing career spanning decades and even now, people are still talking about her. she may not go down in history as a hugely talented vocalist, but she will be remembered nevertheless for her great music she has made and for being one of the most successful recording artists of all time. being a madonna fan has never been for the faint hearted. my parents despised her, kids in school hated her, i never met that many work colleagues that rated her highly and she has always had her critics in the media. yet none of that ultimately mattered, because to me, she is an amazing artist and a huge inspiration. i love her voice, not a day goes by without me listening to something from her and there is always a song to suit whatever mood i am feeling. she doesn't belt like some of the warbling balladeers lauded by many, but her vocal performances can be moving, believable and passionate. madonna conveys a lot emotion in her voice and that is all i need vocally from any singer.

OYH is one of the songs that got me into Madonna all those years ago, her crooning voice on there sounded so different to her higher pitched one on her earlier songs, I couldn't believe it was her singing it. It was then I discovered what a lovely singer she actually is, also LTT, this is why I love her ballads so much, they showcase her vocals so well.
She looked lovely the other night, a bit vulnerable looking but she hurt her leg and must still be in pain. I don't go in for shouty, screamy singing, ugh, awful, can't listen to Mariah or Whitney, too noisy. Madonna on the other hand, nice and soft and I can make out every word she sings, she's always had good clarity has Madonna! |

I do lurk on this thread every once in a while, because I like the way you guys talk about Madonna on here, and for once on this MF you seem to get a balanced debate and some interesting things raised. I didn't want to cause offence by my comments about Madonna at the Grammy's - it was only my opinion.
gpk - I don't know whether your earlier comment was aimed at me or not, but just in case it was - i'd like to just say from my standpoint that I don't create my opinion about Madonna's performances based on what people have said about Gaga. I realise that parts of the fanbase are in conflict but I've never had a problem with madonna and I think that it's great that she still does her own thing bar what everybody else thinks. She's done it all her career, so why change that outlook now? Not to go on too much about her here, cos I'm not some crazed fan, and I realise this is the M AP - but LG is having a career low point right now, that much is clear. I have certainly not defended everything she does, and welcome criticism and other people's standpoints, I don't have a problem with it at all! However, I do think that when she sang OYH it was out of tune - I have perfect pitch so I'd like to think I'm a good judge of what is and isn't good intonation. I've heard her sound so much better live, and this performance for me wasn't one of those times. I think it was good that she was there as she's done so much to further the cause and bring it to light, at a time when it wasn't popular to do so. And it's always nice to see her singing, as she's known for her big productions. I just feel that the Grammy's was not her best night vocal-wise that's all. As you yourselves have said, she's not going to go down as the greatest vocalist ever, but you cannot deny her contribution to the industry and how she's paved the way for so many artists that came after her, and those that are yet to break through. Her legacy is undeniable. That just happened to be my opinion on one of the performances she did. I think however, on the whole, that the Same Love performance was a very important one in terms of pop culture and political statements in general. I liked the message, and as I said before, I think it's important and key that Madonna was there. I'm sorry if I offended anybody, or if you think I shouldn't be posting this in here, I just wanted to explain myself and my standpoint because I like all you guys and think your posts here and elsewhere are very interesting and balanced! |

I thought her voice was OK for most of Open Your Heart, until after the choir finished and she sang the line again while moving over to Mary Lambert - THAT was definitely a misjudged note and you can hear her trying to correct it by lifting it a bit at the end.
Her solo singing with Lambert was OK, but when they sang together it was fine. Overall, I quite enjoyed it. Nice moment. -------- The latest rumour is that she's performing with Miley Cyrus for Miley's MTV Unplugged session, which is fairly interesting to say the least. I hope it's one of Madonna's tunes. |

I haven't watched MTV in years. I didn't know they even still aired Unplugged shows. I thought it was all reality programming now. |

What does everyone think about that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJM1SOgK62I Here's a great article by the writer Liz Smith about Madonna and the Grammys. Great to hear some positivity! http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/node/1910488 Most people didn't realize she was still in pain from her foot injury. But that's just like her to get on with things and not to complain and try to get everyone's pity. |

Thanks guys for the kind words! I was just worried I had given offence, and didn't want to in the slightest! For what it's worth, I think it's disgusting the level of vitriol Madonna receives for purely continuing to do what she loves, because she's over a certain age - and yet, men never receive the same amount of stigma. It's ageist and sexist. I'm glad she continues to perform and write new music, I think the industry needs somebody like Madonna, and she's still got a lot to contribute and say!
Not sure about the Miley duet though - will she reign her in or will it be totally outrageous?? Any news on what they will sing? I hope it's a Madonna song rather than a Miley one! |

I'm thrilled she's doing an unplugged session and hope she does more in the future. Her American Life promo was the best because of it. I don't mind that Miley is involved so long as the songs are Madonnas

Seems like Perez Hilton is in the 'no more dance' camp judging by his latest tweets. I agree with him to be honest and would be massively disappointed if she worked with last years producers and Daft Punk just because they are the 'in' thing right now

When all is said and done MM the reason she gets so much hate and nastiness is because she's still more successful than their faves and they hate her being called the queen of pop. When anyone else can get better tour grosses and sell over 300million albums and beat her number ones then they will be the queen of pop but they use the old excuse to get at her because they can't dispute the facts and it's quite tiresome to be honest

i have given up trying to rationalise or make sense of her detractors behaviour tbh. there could be a whole host of reasons, but whatever. some people just love to hate her for whatever reason and i am not going to waste time making sense of that. i mainly avoid defending her on the main forum these days tbh, because she is a figure of hate here and you cannot conduct intelligent discussion with people that harbour irrational hatred.
however, i do object to comments about her fans and i think a lot of the criticisms are unfair. suggesting fans should "get a grip", "get a hearing aid" and insinuations that her fans are deluded is not constructive or in line with the rules here at ds. we shouldn't have to put up with that, its insulting and patronising. with regards to perez, i think the day any artist takes on board his advice is a sad day for music tbh. credit where credit is due, i applaud gaga for ditching him and taking a united stand against his trolling with xtina on-board. i have been thinking about this a lot lately and i have come to the conclusion that madonna should ultimately make the music she wants to make. granted, she hasn't had a very strong commercial era since "confessions" and perhaps her intuition is somewhat off, but i just want her to make music that she feels is true to her. i think after all these years she has earned that right personally.i have to say i am really excited by this collaboration with miley. "bangerz" was one of my favourite albums of last year and i thought the media s**t storm she created last year was hilarious. i know some fans will frown at this pairing and she is almost certainly setting herself up for another on-line bashing, but for me, its another performance i didn't know we were getting and i am personally looking forward to it.

According to people who were at the taping, she and Miley did a mash of Don't Tell Me and Miley's song Don't Stop. They were wearing cowboy Western influenced outfits.
Sounds great! Don't Tell Me is one of my favourite Madonna songs. I wouldn't mind her doing something like that on the next album. More of a midtempo pop song and less dance. Maybe more mature and less commercial than the last two albums but still cool and not too MOR and boring. Music is a great album. Very diverse, with some electronics but not full on dance, but also with pop and acoustic and ballads. It would be great to have another album like that. |

Here's a picture!
http://allaboutmadonna.com/2014/01/p...-unplugged.php So cute! It's nice how Madonna tries to meet Miley halfway on her own terms. Miley has a country element to some of her music and so does Don't Tell Me. It wouldn't work to impose more of a straight up dance/club thing on Miley. Don't Tell Me has always sounded great live so I can't wait to see this. |
