Madonna is now at the stage of her career where she makes music because she wants to and not because her livelihood depends on it. All of her albums are totally different to each other because she is influenced by certain styles of music at certain times of her life. It's a little bit early to be disappointed by her new collaboration. In an ideal world I would love a Like a Prayer/Ray of Light style album, but as Madonna never revisits her past work, I am eagerly looking forward to new album from my favouriteartist, regardless of who she collaborates with.”
I completely agree.
It's getting a wee bit annoying with the whole ''Madonna trying to be down with the kids'' criticism. Wearing risqué costumes (cone bra '90, cone bra '12), doing/saying provocative things (dedicating Papa Don't Preach to the Pope, super-imposing a swastika on Marine Le Pen's forehead), hanging out with DJs (Shep Pettibone, Avicii), collaborating with current artists (Prince, Justin Timberlake), dating male models (Tony Ward, Jesus Luz) are all stuff Madonna's been doing her entire career. The only things that have changed are her age, and the way other people react to her age.
Oh, and her face. Now, I'm not fond of the surgery and all that, and I've said that before in here (and I think put out a couple of members by doing so) but I was re-reading Tina Fey's book
Bossypants recently and she made two interesting observations:
1. That people don't want to listen to women when they don't want to screw them any more (which is fairly relevant seeing as Madonna's a pop artist and not Hillary Clinton). And...
2. That Lorne Michaels once told her to go home because she looked tired (in a chapter where she interpreted various things Michaels had said to her over the years as advice) - and she interpreted this as meaning that if she doesn't look her best on the job, it's going to distract from her work.
In a weird way, these things might explain Madonna's surgery - she's a provocative, sexually charged and energetic performer but if she went out with a face like Betty White (no shade, I love her) people would take her less seriously than they even do now.
Or, y'know, she could just be really vain.
Anyway, that's my two (twenty?) cents on the matter. And I'm looking forward to the new material, obviously.
