Yes, that happens with Madonna a lot. People criticize things she does but then it becomes an influence later. American Life was that way and also funnily enough her song Celebration. Everyone criticized for having a dated 90's sound, but there's this revival of 90's style house music going on now. One day it will happen with MDNA even though everyone's down on that album right now.
I've been listening to HC recently too. It's sounding great for the summer. I think a lot of fans had it in their mind and me included that they didn't like hip hop and the producers were in that field and they were predisposed hate it. It has its hip hop elements but it's pretty much still a pop dance album.
