The thing about comparing Madonna and Mariah's voices is that while Madonna has got stronger vocally throughout her career, Mariah has got weaker and is now in a very bad state. Mariah can still sing on track but live she is a disgrace and its very painful to watch. The recent Good Morning America stuff would have killed her career had she been a new artist.
I did much prefer Madonna's more raw and thinner vocals pre 1995 and the Evita voice change but its great to look back and see how far she has come vocally. All that said, I do feel hand on heart Madonna's vocal peak was 1991 (regardless of how good she sounded on Ray of Light) and that Oscar performance for Sooner Or Later. I don't think she has ever been that good since. Her greatest live moment imho and it needed to be as well. |

I think she is trying to do what people say is good singing, but to me it's not Madonna. What was she doing around 1991/1992? As I remember that was when she was doing Rescue Me, Justify My Love and Erotica and songs like that, I know a lot of people love those, but I didn't like that whole phase where she was talking on her records instead of singing. I want to hear her sing. I love her voice on American Life and Music. I also really loved her voice on the MDNA tour. It wasn't as good on Sticky and Sweet, but she really got it back on MDNA, so I think she will sound great on the next album. |

I think across her legacy there have been great patches where vocally she pushed herself a lot..from TFA - TB you can hear her push herself more and more which is so beautiful to hear.
LAP i feel was a peak in terms of relationships with her voice and the rhythms/productions which is out of this universe...and as mentioned here 1990 - 1993 she experimented with talky singy/whispery styles and made her own stamp on it...to this day singers can be compared to that period of time...adore the Erotica album and era so much due to this. ANd BS you can hear her voice playing and toying with pushing herself in different territories....ROL obviously was a massive shake up totally while still her trademark and signature tones, it opened up another layer...which she also kept with Music album sessions and indeed American Life where she played with more earthy tones to her voice...a kind aof warmth with a chill/coldness to it which i adore when i hear it. Confessions ou could hear more of this tone she played with on AL with a warmth/commanding nature. HC you could hear she was toying with her first album style/happy singy kinda type...but in some areas it didnt work as well as others...similarly with MDNA it was a similar style of singing...but some moments she totally let rip and opened up different styles....so i look forward to hearing where she could push it for album 13

Interesting article on the MDNA DVD and premiere. http://music-mix.ew.com/2013/06/18/m...umentary-epix/
From this it appears, that it's more like a documentary film than just a straight filming of the actual concert. Or maybe they are referring to just the extra documentary at the end of the DVD. Not sure. We'll have to see what EPIX airs this weekend. |

Lovely to hear more and more news on the dvd
Madonna has worked so hard on this, i can imagine it won't be your typical concert dvd I like how she has incoporated footage from 88 different shows. Beyonce did that with her I Am tour dvd and it worked really well. |

Glad to hear that! I think it is one of her most underrated albums. For me, it kind of sums up everything I love about Madonna. The fun happy pop side along with the darker side.
You go from a confessional/pulsating darkness which leads into all out murder sprees and enjoyment and eccentricities within that field. (the Electroglam into heavy Dub/Industrial) And then after that bleakness you need to get a real "high" in a destructive/constructive relationship (which the production in Im Addicted showcases) then after you get massive euphoric highs/carefreeness of Power pop/Electropop anthems...and then after that high comes the more melancholy/self analysis and letting go....and i really do love that across the album...the only thing that guts me is the way it was promoted/marketed....i mean we are 15 months since it was released right? And i really dont see any relationship to anything in commercial/chart toppers to the MDNA album then and since MDNA there hasnt really been anything like that as such either....I mean the features that MIA and Nicki had on the album werent their field either in terms of "genre" and that becomes more obvious on the concerts around the world too. It really brings a new meaning to "private darkness" maybe it was the album she didnt want to share with the masses of the world in such an extreme maybe. I mean the lyrics and content is so damn honest, frank and personal...and there is a eccentricity/sugary side there too to warble the balance which i find interesting too. But i would shake around the tracklist a bit (have Beautiful Killer on the main disc definitely and put Some girls earlier in the album too as the electroglam/Industrial/Punk sounds there mesh with the earlier songs) but yeah...its like when you got into HC last month...now MDNA really has opened my ears to other elements there too .

Love it! She's quite sweet and charming with her fans. I love how normal she is. I never understood why people say she's a bitch or cold. I love her personality! She's playful which I guess some people see as bitchy, but it's all in good fun. She's really lovely. I like how she acknowledges that touring is hard work but she loves it. I think some artists give a false impression sometimes that the music business is all fun and easy, but it takes a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, tears to reach her level of success and artistry.

She sounds all American again. And of course she's still someone, (there was plenty of screaming in that clip)it's just I love the younger version of her (especially TB and WTG)and that's my era, when I was younger! And of course she's bitchy but it's a fun bitchy not a malicious bitchy, she just likes a bit of banter! |

The outfit is a tribute to Marlene Dietrich. Apparently one of Marlene's movies premiered at the theatre where they were having the MDNA event. I love all her outfits. They're always appropriate to the occassion or connected to it somehow. She doesn't just randomly put something on, there's a lot of thought and concept that goes into it.
I hope for the next album she goes back to the concept thing where the look fits in with the sound of the album. |

What i loved there is...Madonna always reinvents her look/shakes it up (the past few months alone!) But she is still the same inspired punk girl that arrived in NYC in 1977! 35 years later now look
Still on top commanding the fans, the crowds and at the top ever.To be honest i think in terms of performance, presence, style..she really has matured her craft and owns it indefinitely...I think we are more than ready for her to really shake stuff up with this project and even moreso...album 13...a really iconic image/performance and really push it to the masses....the US have shwocased that they indeed cared for her all along despite the blacklistings of the mid 00s....she still commands the crowds there without conforming to the "safe/commercial/nations sweetheart appeal" she did it by being MADONNA....so next up she i think will need to definitely mend that bridge in terms of her worldwide showcase. MDNA i feel has laid a lot of foundation down as to where she can/could stem next and she sounds so damn inspired in that chat session/ Speaking of which i do love her so much in intimate settings like that...there have been several moments like that in interviews where fans/the audience are surrounding M and the interviewer and the banter all round is always top there....20 mins chatting with Madonna....thats insane! Would love her to just kinda have an hour special event perhaps for the next album where she just....talks with the audience/fans and maybe performs alongside too....kinda like AN Audience With but different...mor eintimate and special would be slick that and glasto headlining

I feel that is what we have missed with the MDNA era overall...we miss that association....But i love this high fashion androgyny figure...i loved her showcase of punky styles that echeod to her roots too...and i love that she has mixed it up in terms of style too over the past few months...i can only hope that she is trying to figure out.....I love that Marlene got a showcase though and old skool cinematics.....her heart and mind is cinema/performance and that to me is always what makes her music sound and feel so special and connecting...its so different I can only hope the draws to cinema/her idols as a child will come into play

Josh, I thought about you when I was reading this interview today with Courtney Love. I know you aren't into her too much, but she said in this interview that she loves the music of your guy Blood Orange who you recommended for Madonna to work with. See, Courtney is really cool! Wouldn't it be interesting if Courtney and Madonna sung together on a track produced by Blood Orange? Now, that would be something different!

Oh FFS
In the 'is Rianna the new Madonna' thread, I have never read such an ignorant, completely ill informed post, discrediting her writing skills and talent etc...... I know it's a normal thing to read on DS but..... please!, I had to stop myself replying through fear of ranting beyond words. It just makes my blood boil. |

Ri is Ri and M is M, the constant comparisons annoys me like hell. And Fear Of Fours post? Just how insulting can a person be? I posted but I just put the first line of the above paragraph, I was going to post something rude and angry but I thought better of it. |

Ugh! shouldnt have been peed off seeing it...but we all know who the poster is.....Fear of FOurs or whatever comment is rediculous i did genuinely laugh...i mean belittling M so much and even discrediting everything she is and saying there were similarities....omfg!
I mean hitting fans with mics...who holds mics anymore since 1990??? ![]() But seriously fan or not....you can never discredit what Madonna is and stands for and her achievements or talents...that is soemthing that always rubs me the rwrong way...not just in Madonnas case (although often is) but others too...i mean just because im not a fan of Mariah or Whitney or Celine or whatever else doesnt mean that i say "they cant sing, they arent talented" rediculous claims -_- aaaah!!!! Foeck it |
