i think he gets a lot of unfair stick. overall he seems like a really lovely bloke. he's a talented guy, who's worked really hard for everything he's achieved, has been through all the highs and lows and still come out of it a seemingly good person. very very private with his personal life, though seems to be a good husband and father. as helen snowflake pointed out, for a man that's been around for over 20 years (both infront of and behind the scenes), there is pretty much no one in the industry that has a bad word to say about him. it was really only ever robbie williams that did, and that was a complicated mess to say the least (plus, even robbie admits he did play on that to use him as a gimmick to further himself). he's never had any outrageious scandals either - again, highly unusual for someone in the industry >20 years. never cheated on his wife, never enjoyed a stint or 10 in rehab...the worst that could be said about him "scandal" wise was the tax thing, and even that doesn't really count - that's just great accounting. his comments on x factor are generally fair too. i agree with almost all of them. the only place he falls down on that count is with reference to his own acts, and all the judges do that because as mentors they have to (which is why i hate the whole "mentor" aspect. remove that and have completely unbiased judges = a better show). otherwise his comments are generally excellent.
the biggest criticism he seems to get is for being "boring"...whatever. i'd sooner take "boring" and a decent bloke than shall we say, the likes of mel gibson.
so overall, yes.
