This is unfortunate.
Paddles 2 to 9 pass a verdict on Bruce's performance tonight. Paddle 1 because of the way it is phrased:
Time to retire
asks not for a verdict on tonight but a sentence for tomorrow. This sentencing could be
based on one night's verdict,
or on a whole host of other factors despite tonight's good performance.
Paddle 10
"Outstanding! Sign up for another series!"
similarly asks for sentencing, not verdict.
Perhaps that's why ten voters with entrenched positions voted for paddles 1 and 10 respectively before the show, not bothering about a verdict, just diving into the sentence. I.E. despite a performance rated 9 tonight, paddle 1 could be raised where a juror is so determined about his preferred outcome that he overlooks the verdict in front of him.
The process in court to reach a verdict is scrupulously separated from the subsequent choice of sentence. I would not like to face a court which hangs first and tries the case later.
