I really hope what he and his family have been through is not typical. He was providing context for the song choice I don't think it was particularly manipulative on his part

As you say, typical talent show stuff. At least you're not suggesting that they don't all do the same. Even James said there wasn't much to brag about before he came on xfactor. Obviously he can't say his brother died if he didn't. But Jahmene's did. Anyway, Jahmene doesn't need sympathy. His singing speaks for itself - he was outstanding tonight! End of.

Do people really think he is playing on his brothers death to win a competition?

They certainly open their mouths before putting their brain into gear. What can you say?

He is not feeding stories to the press, nor is he tweeting about any of this stuff. So, I fail to see how he personally is playing the sympathy card.
He has acknowledged some of the crummy things he and his family have been through. I didn't see him go into any details about any of the events. He will reference it but I really don't see any evidence that he is milking it

I actually agree that the sob stories are boring and not really appropriate but they've been a facet of the show the last few years. That's not his fault. I don't think he should be vilified because of it.
