Terrific post but unfortunately, no, most people don't seem to able to be honest. There will always be people who will blindly back their favourite because they don't want to be seen to be backing a loser. For these people, it's all about one-upmanship and trying to get everyone to agree with them. I'd say it was kids in the playground stuff but as you rightly say, it happens right at the very 'top' of society, with politicians.
