I don't get this fixation with them not winning because of being American. If that were the case, they wouldn't have got as far as they did in the first place.
I think it's more a case of DS needing to find some reason that their favourite didn't win, other than the other being more popular / just happening to receive more votes. |

I really wanted Ashley to win just to prove, mainly to myself, that everything was on level-footing, unbiased and there wasn't any prejudice there.
Oh dear. ![]() Feels a bit of a flat ending in the general scheme of things.

The problem is that the final averages about a million more viewers than the other episodes, which means there are a lot of people voting in the final who haven't watched the show previously, people who won't have a clue who Ashley was or what she'd been like.

Agreed, that's what swung it and that's unfair. Annoying, they probably thought "Who the hell is this American? Oh look... I'll vote Janine!" despite not watching the show.
People who tune in to watch the final only aren't going to spend their money voting for anyone. The only reason the figures get a boost in the final is probably because everyone who's been following the show watches it live instead of on catch up. |

Ashley this year, Adam in BB13, Jermaine in CBB5, Janice Dickinson in IAC, etc... they all came 2nd. In the final, the British or in CBB5 case (an Indian) wins.
This looks as if it was close, and if it was, the trial may have been crucial. if Charlie had done worse than Ashley it would have been difficult to justify voting for Charlie. It also suggested that Charlie would have done similarly well if she had had Ashley's early tasks |

I find this hard to believe.
How Ashley nailed all the polls, but lost. How Ashley was leading going into the final and was overtaken. |

I wonder how close it was. Dec said the winner had changed whilst they were on air so it seems Ashley was winning at one point.

Charlie may have won votes from the Eastenders crowd, but surely Pussycat Dolls were hugely popular here too and helped Ashley get plenty of votes too - I'd imagine more of the (presumably mostly female and/or young) viewers care about someone who knows Nicole Scherzinger than they did about Dr Who or darts or boxing

Oh were so xenophobic arnt we! An indian, portugese and irish housemate have all won big brother and there have been contestants from loads of countries on it yet on the american one there hasnt been a contestant from any other country.
We have had unknown american celebrities on im a celeb and they have done well. How many foreign contestants were on im a celeb usa? I wanted Ashley to win but charlie has been on one of the biggest shows in the country for years so she has a fan base already and was a good camp mate and didnt do anything bad for people not to vote for her. Oh apart from the crime of being a mum of course |

I am sceptical as to how true Dec's statement was, but it certainly affected the odds and leads to the conclusion that Ashley was more popular (and garnered more votes) from the show's hardcore fans, but lost out to those who tuned in in their droves to watch the final.
Tonight, the trial showed Charlie doing as well as Ashley which answered the question was she a credible winner, suggested they were equal and suggested she would have had more success if they had given her more trials. There's also a difference in the trial between Ashley doing again what she's shown she's capable of, and Charlie having more difficulty but managing to do as well . That adds a bit to Charlie's achievement and adds a surprise factor. if its close anyway that may swing it to Charlie during the show. |

I just wanted to say two things! 1) I agree it was the casual vote that swung it, I mean the people who don't vote other than for the winner! They probably thought about it but in then end went with the safe choice of Charlie - they know her, like her in Eastenders, feel for her over her daughter BUT were impressed by her attitude on the trial - she lacked Ashley's strength in it true but she showed a more relatable reaction which is what these casual voters go for!
2) American celebrities do fall short of winning on our shows but Im pretty sure a Brit has never won any major US show right? |

If so do you pay tax to HMRC? If not how do you support yourself while in UK? Are you here on a Visa? If not why not? Are you related to Costa Coffee? Love Ashley girl, voted for her and Charlie, amazing final, well done girls, don't listen to the sofa bound bores and the poison they spread because their life is lacking. Way to go the girls! x |

didn't watch the final (the Killing is much more interesting) but this house wanted Ashley to win. Maybe if we had voted?

It's the answer I'm afraid and it explains everything.
How Ashley nailed all the polls, but lost. How Ashley was leading going into the final and was overtaken. I think there is a very small cultural gap which may have lost Ashley a few votes, though no big explanation is needed since Charlie was a perfectly good winner. It was the same with the Shannon twins in celebrity big brother, who were rather similar to Ashley - bright, pretty, sparky, confident. It was noticeable that when the top four were called into the bush telegraph and asked if they wanted to win, David and Eric both said flatly that they were 'in it to win it'. That was fine - the are both sportsmen, and no one would expect anything else. Ashley said "Of course I would like to win!" and Charley said, "I've come so far, and it would be lovely to...[hesitates]... see it through to the end!" You can see the American way vs the English way here: a sweet young woman should never use the word 'win'. American see it as honest and natural, but Brits are inclined to find it a bit brash. |

This year I would have been happy with any of the final 3 winning but yet again we have the Brit bashers - were all xenophobic because an American didn't win? I mean come on, has a Brit ever won an American reality show, in fact has a Brit ever been in an American reality show ( genuine question as I don't know )
The final 3 were the right ones and any of them winning was fine by me all this rubbish about how Ashley didn't win because she is American is just that rubbish, she didn't win because Charlie's profile in this country is higher end off its got bugger all to do with what country she is from |

Charlie won because she is better known that's all, if we were anti american or having an overseas winner Ashley would not have got to the final. Both of them were worthy winners, I suppose Charlie being so different from the character she plays helps, we got to know the actress behind the character, who is as nice as Janine is horrible.

It's probably the same in the US though. Katherine Jenkins should have won Dancing with the Stars but was pipped by an American.

This " no american will ever win a UK reality show" really really annoys me. ASHLEY WAS IN THE FINAL TWO!!! Sorry for the caps but it needs to be pointed out. If we didn't like americans she would of been out first. But maybe we brits vote on the person, not the nationality. And in the end Charlie got more votes but non US members of the human race were still voting for the yank weren't they? yes we were. Americans can't win everything, just like a british celeb on a US tv show won't win everything. So the brit won, get over yourself. |

I don't think anybody is anti-American or xenophobic.
It's just that I believe people are more comfortable with what they are familiar with and who they feel more affinity with. Likewise it will probably be a mountain to climb for a Brit to win an American based reality show. |
