Don't really get why they rate him.

The lad has a terrible voice. They rate him for things my ears can't hear and my eyes can't see. He's a Magic Art picture, hanging on the wall in a dog whistle factory.

Don't know why but a story my mum used to tell me when I was little about the emperor's new clothes come to mind.

I dont like his voice much either, he often sounds like a drunk person doing karaoke with atrocious diction but the judges think he's the Second Coming WTF Why do the judges think he's so good? His slurry, "intense" style is off putting and doesnt make me feel anything.
I've heard better buskers and street singers than him.

Depends what you mean by a good singer. A robot who can sing very well with no emotions or someone who may not be technically superior but create goosebumps.

Jamesis neither

He's not good at all.

I disagree

not a conventional pop voice agreed

but he has an earthiness a raw quality to his voice that really shows emotion

I prefer to,listen to him rather than watch ( not being derogatory in any way i'm an oldie that grew up listening rather than watching)

if you don't watch but only listen his vocals take on another dimension

they really are powerful in a fell it in the gut kinda way

He's got a cool tone, but that's about it. He's nowhere near the best singer technically, nor does he have the best stage presence out of the lot. He doesn't have a lot of charisma either. However, I do think he's a good musician, good on the guitar and seems to write good songs.

What on earth does that mean? I just think he has an average voice. Christopher has a better voice than him and yet James gets so over hyped.

Hopelessly overrated by the judges : he's an above average street busker at best and is certainly no Damien Rice, Paulo Nuttini etc.

earthiness means a basic sound

a tone that you love but you are not quite sure why

an honest sound that comes from the gut and portrays raw emotion

well that is what it means to me anyway

you are free to disagree

He's also an awful guitarist... I like when he sings with just the guitar because he sounds even worse than usual!!!

True, and great post

Well exactly, though I thought the same about Ella. They build very average acts up to be the next best thing. Why? Dunno, maybe they're proper mad?

I think some posters don't know the difference between "voice" and "tone". Chris for example has a big belting voice, suitable for west end show and cruise ships. Other artists don't have a big belting voice, but has a great tone, which is better for recording and better sounding on radios.

There are dozens of these guys around though : I've seen loads of James Arthurs on Irish TV talent shows over the years (as they've aways allowed singer / songwriter types play live guitar). He's OK but in no way does he deserve the praise he's getting from those four chancers on the panel : even allowing for his passable voice and musicianship, the guy is a charisma free zone.

He is hopelessly pretentious. Everything about him is forced. How you can equate raw emotion with James is beyond me.

Different strokes etc I suppose.

Has anyone actually heard his songs? Barlow saying he has not heard them but knows they will be brilliant is absolutely bizarre. I suppose it's the same 'inside view' gene that convinced him Frankie Craptoza was destined for greatness.

It's not about having the best voice, it's about having that sumthin' sumthin'.

It's a good question : if he's such a stunning songwriter who is going to release great albums, how come we haven't heard his songs on the show yet? Lucy was allowed perform original songs after all.

When he sings it sounds like he needs to clear his throat
I also find him arrogant and really unlikeable...

But I think most agree that none of them have any sumthin' and rather than abandon the show, we need to vote for who we consider the worthiest.

If his songs are that good why is he even on X Factor? He did a brief cameo of one of his songs on Xtra Factor and it was bloody awful. I couldn't make the words out through the grunting and gasping.

No doubt there is deep meaningful talent at work there that we mere mortals do not understand
