I don't understand this American repulsion to things like corned beef and black pudding. This is the country who gave us hot dogs, chicken nuggets and cheese in a can!

Hang on there with the black pudding...it's not just Americans who give it a wide berth.

I wonder how the Americans would react to the humble faggot served up with a generous portion of mushy peas?

Given what that word means in the US they would be well shocked if it was offered

Brains Faggots didn't succeed when they tried selling them in the USA, about twenty or so years ago.

It's strongly believed that this is down to the logan, "Brains Faggots, great balls of goodness!" (this has gone down as one of the worst advertising mistakes in history, though not as bad as the Yugoslav version of Pepsi's, "The drink that gives you life!", campaign that was mis-translated as, "Peps, the drink thta brings your ancestors back from the grave!" )

I wondered if it was a class thing. She kept saying in a mystified tone, "meat from a can! Who eats meat from a can?" - and I thought, well, the US is famously the country of canning, which is why they have a notable rate of botulism and we don't. But perhaps she has never spent any time with central state agricultural communities and mixes in circles where food is always fresh and delicate.

Well...........one good thing came out of our recent intensive corned beef threads................

I bought a fray bentos 'Classic' Steak Pudding in a tin and had it for lunch today.............it was grrrrrrrreat !

I've always loved a steak pud but they're such a bummer to cook..........steam for about 6 hours for a few mouthfuls........

But now I've got a microwave it's tinned steak puds all the way...........I'm going to stock up on them.............

Did you ever see the episode of Married With Children where Kelly was going for an audition to be Miss Weenie Tot..........

They talk about the secret recipe and a bloke walks past with a wheelbarrow full of 'beaks and claws'.............and everyone at the Weenie factory only has one hand..............

I think they're now actually in little plastic microwaveable 'tins'. And ... if you go to B&M on certain days - they have them at a great price.

I'm not too fond of them (hubby likes them though).
