Hi, this probably a bit basic but I don't know how you link your laptop to an LCD TV in order to watch TV, Netflix etc.

Am I right in saying it's an HDMI cable? That pretty much every modern TV has one? I have a second hand Samsung 32" from seven years ago.

Thanks

I use a VGA lead and male to male audio cable as that is the only output on my laptop I have.

You need compatible connectors on both the laptop and the TV. There are three main options for graphics connections on a laptop, VGA, DVI or HDMI. The TV may have similar connections. Fortunately DVI and HDMI are compatible so a simple lead with appropriate plugs each end can be used. You cannot plug DVI or HDMI into VGA with a simple cable however.

But I would assume that if you knew what connectors were on the laptop and TV you wouldn't be asking the question but be off buying the lead. So if you don't know what is available post the exact make and model numbers of the laptop and TV and we may be able to tell you if and how they can be connected.

Unfortunately neither the Samsung or Toshiba websites are playing ball at the moment. Searching the Samsung website is not working and Toshiba simply say the C660 series has an "external monitor" port with no indication of type! Very useful.

So I've had to resort to google and alternative sources which suggest the Toshiba only has VGA out and the Samsung has a VGA in. If that is true then a VGA to VGA lead will take care of the pictures and you will probably need a 3.5mm stereo jack to 3.5mm stereo jack lead for the noise.

Hey thanks for doing that mate.

I'll just check for either cable now.

So both stereo jack and VGA cable run from TV to laptop?
Where would you connect the stereo jack?

Headphone out on laptop and the socket next to the VGA socket on the TV. That is assuming you want both pictures and sound to come out of the telly.

Oh and before splashing out on any cables double check they do actually have VGA sockets. They look like this

Your TV has a VGA port and to it a 3.5mm Audio port for PC connection, as does your Laptop.

Something like the following should be OK,
