I disagree. They've done this a couple of times on DWTS now and it works ok, as long as they are not completely insane about the dances they pick.

I don't see how it is a bad thing to try something new, it's hardly a guarantee that it will appear every year from now on. Give it a chance, it may be ok.

I hate hate hate dance fusion.

Apart from Shawn's paso/tango, but they just go together and she is awesomeness itself.

Hopefully this will go the way of the rock 'n' roll and be such a trainwreck, it will be a one series only deal. Apart from Louis, who will do an awesome jive/quickstep (I hope...)

Most of the international versions derived from the SCD format have already introduced all manner of changes, and many of them bear more resemblance to DWTS than to Strictly.

The small number of 'regular' fans who you think are being marginalised are far outweighed by the mass audience who just want to be entertained early on a Saturday tea time. It's never going to be the time for a niche programme on a mainstream channel, not should it try to be. The BBC are offering a mass entertainment experience, which is in contrast to what the other channels offer at that time, and it precisely what the BBC should be doing.

How can the judges or any of us judge a fusion dance ? How can you mark it? How can you say when a move/step/rhythm is wrong/incorrect with fusion?

Meh that might be ok. Depends what the others get.

It's not so much 'fusion' as switching between dances a few times in the course of a 90 second routine.

Which, if you have two dances that just don't go together, is gonna be a nightmare. Like Gilles Marini's Samba/Argentine Tango.

It could have been much, much, much worse, it could have been a paso/foxtrot or a cha cha/QS which I don't think will suit Louis as much as a tango/rumba.

Again, if he can crack a romantic/sexy/sensual performance it should be good as it appears that Flavia has danced and choreographed these a lot. She's brilliant at tango/AT so it should be choreographically amazing.

I'm imagining Robin or James haven't choreographed many fusions.

Alesha did that for her showdance (sort of).

I am a bit lost now. Do the couples choose their two dance or are they all allocated two random dance styles.

Sorry for being a thickie

Yes! At the risk of sounding too traditional and not 'down with it' I would like to see a couple perform a full dance of what they haven't done already instead of two shortened dances they haven't done crammed into one. The full dances are short normaly, so why condense it even more, unless they're going to be extending the length duration to that of two dances?

I think they can choose yeah.

Someone said Flavia told them the only restriction is that they didn't do either of the fusion dances in the previous week and that they won't do either of them the week after if they get through. I think. I'll check again.

That's definitely true. I'm still a bit worried at how to combine the two, but if anyone would know how to do that it's Flavia. And Vincent and Pasha as well actually.

James, Bobby and Karen's choreography skills guarantee at least 3 trainwrecks next week.

It sounds like some keep fit video from the 80's.

Robin's been pretty good at choreographing the same dance into most things this series. Boom-tish

I did think that Lisa might have the advantage as she's done the same Latin three times, so just choose one of them and bolt it on to a waltz. She should know it pretty well by now.

OK. Thanks. I was thinking that one of the dances had to be a new dance but maybe not then?

Does one have to ballroom and the other one latin?

Via Twitter but it wasn't clear who did the choosing - just what they will dance.

Surely at this stage they should be doing two dances? why do they have to mess around with the format? When is the final?

We have 2 weeks after fusion, semis week after fusion and the final the week after that - the 22nd.

I wasn't dead against the idea of a dance mash-up when I thought it was combining two completely new dances together.

But I don't like that a new dance (which is potentially tricky) can be themed around a previous one (which might have been performed very well).

It seems like an avoidance strategy and a form of dumbing down to me.

Heaven help us. Its difficult enough when you're trying to follow the footwork in one kind of dance but to switch to another in a few seconds is making a laughing stock of the competition.
Especially now when its coming to the end and you want to find the best dancing couple. How can anyone judge a celeb's dancing in such circumstances .

Those producton idiots are doing everything they can to blur the edges and destroy SCD as a dancing competition what with flashing lights, lasers, daft music, daft costumes, fusion, Wembley, props etc etc.
