The Power of Love

Why was James Arthur trying to make out like his version of The Power of Love was innovative and surprising when to me it sounded almost exactly like the John Lewis advert??

in fairness to him he didn't , it was the judges that gave him the credit

you could understand maybe the reaction to earlier instances of this where he did versions similar to youtube covers but you could hardly have missed the gabrielle alpin take on this song

Happens every year. Arthur has zero originality like those before him. Matt Cardle was lauded as a genius in 2010 by the ignorami for his acoustic version of Britney's 'Hit Me Baby...' when it was of course a verbatim and reasonably poor copy of Travis's earlier cover of the song. It is a very important deceit. The reason that Chris is lampooned as 'karaoke' by the supposedly enlightened on here and elsewhere is because he does straight takes of songs, based on the original versions, rather than takes based on more obscure covers. Oh and apparently, he lacks honesty and integrity too. You work that one out.

I think it is very arrogant of the producers to try and sell this one as original given that the damn advert is on our screens every 5 mins at the moment!! Bit hard to miss

When Dermot read out Holly Johnson's response to it, do you think James had any idea who he was talking about?

from the comments i have read not sure holly johnson knew much about james's performance anyway , he supposedly just said what he was asked to say when contacted by the x factor pr people

Is it the John Lewis Xmas ad or is it James' performance that help the song skyrocketing to no. 1 on iTunes?

I liked James's version
But Frankie goes to Hollywoods version is the best by a storming mile.

Please remember this is a Frankie song NOT a John Lewis song!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyySGANvRsI

I think the judges frequently show up their 'ignorance' on music (although ignorance probably isn't the right word; after all, nobody can know everything that's every been recorded. Unless it's Tulias, then it usually is genuine ignorance). Remember Louis trying to claim credit for James's cracking version of You Raise Me Up, even though it was quite clearly styled on the Josh Groban version, as Gary kept trying to educate him? I also recall a few years ago an act doing an 'odd' arrangement of a popular song. It was absolutely brilliant, but three of the judges marked him down as they didn't like what the act and his mentor did to the song. It was left to the mentor (Cowell) to point out that it was a Chris Cornell arrangement, not their own. Really wish I could remember the song.

Wasn't it David Cook's version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", on American Idol?

Absolutely brilliant!!

It was THE JUDGES, James didn't claim to invent the song or the version. I loved it but then again I love the snowman ad because it makes me all mushy inside

Deservedly so imo. I absolutely love her stripped back version and find it totally haunting and unforgettable. It absolutely makes the John Lewis ad.

One of my favourite songs ever! James did credit to FGTH with this!

Educating the kids, one ad song at a time!

Not the first time they have ripped off John Lewis ads. Janet Devlin's audition was described as a great rendition of 'Your Song' despite Ellie Goulding doing it months earlier.

The originals of both of these songs are far superior FWIW.

I prefer the John Lewis version even to James' drunken sounding mumbling
What did Holly Johnson say about it?

I know it was originally Frankie Goes to Hollywood - just saying the version James did was from the John Lewis ad. I also think he was trying to take some credit because he said in the vt that "people will be surprised at what I have done with the song"

I am sure James is the one who inspired John Lewis

This is true though. I know many people who were / are very surprised and the open, shameless purloining of the version that is on everyone's TV countless times each day.

I listened very well and it sounded like it most of the way through - the only time it differed was when he did those mumbly bits he tends to do.
