I just don't see why they even needed the family to have a brother in it, if they were never really going to use him.
He had that one storyline last season, but that seems to have been just put in there as a way to use him, rather than it being an important plot point.
This season, he should have just gone off somewhere else, as keeping him for the odd quizzical look, is just pointless.
