I think the general relationsip between Pakistan and the US is this. Officially and generally the US and Pakistan are allies and were throughout the Cold war where India was an ally of the Soviet Union, now Russia.
There have been numerous problems along the way though. America seems to see Pakistan as an ally of convenience and I think Colin Powel once said that. Poor Pakistan seems to be used like that imo by China too.
America never seemed to understand why Pakistan wanted to have its own nuclear bomb after India went nuclear in 1974 and America went cold on Pakistan after Pakistan started trying to make nukes after that.
Then the Russians invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and America wanted to use Pakistan to have a proxy war with Russia over Afghanistan. Once the Russians were defeated in 1988/89, the Americans left Pakistan to it with all these religious fighters now the Taliban hanging around.
America then put Pakistan under massive sanctions, again for going for a nuclear programme. That's what really seems to have peeved Pakistan off since then.
Also before that, Pakistan's military ruler Zia Ul Huq was killed/murdered in 1988 along with 16 of his top Generals and a number of countries could have been behind that in part with an inside job.
I think with regard to your point about the last episode, the ISI were facilitating the handover, were the go between. Pakistan did recognise the Taliban Government in the 90's so had/have links with them and because they were all on the same side against the Russians.
