50/50

A black comedy about cancer, with Jospeh Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogan. I enjoyed it, was funny, sad, scary and others in between.

8/10

Prom Night (1980 version) - 6/10 - not a bad film, bit slow to be honest but it picked up near the end, the ending was a surprise

West of Memphis - more of a documentary - i had watched the 3 previous to this so already knew quite a lot about it, still unbelievable tho.

Dreamhouse - Really surprised, enjoyed it a lot.

The White Ribbon - Thought it was spooky, it wasn't it was crap.

Wreck it Ralph - Went to the cinema today, it was decent enough.

Bit of a catch-up:

Amour

Haneke's old age elegy. One for the ages itself. 10/10

Barton Fink

Coen Bros. Hollywood parable. Turturro and Goodman both firing on all cylinders, and a streak of genuine (but never overplayed) darkness mark this out as one of their very finest. Right up to that mesmerising final scene. 9/10

The Hobbit

Peter Jackson's spangly return to middle earth stumbles early with its glut of slightly identikit dwarves. However it soon picks up thanks to a flighty script and a surprisingly engaging turn from Martin Freeman. Very impressive with its big picture boots on, but you can't shake-off how oddly inessential it all feels. 7/10

Lincoln

Over-earnest and rather dull history in motion. DDL does good work, but with your eyes closed you could be listening to a Simpson's Abe L. D'oh!

Worthy, but not really worth it. 5/10

The Losers

Were the handful who actually paid to see it, presumably. Low-rent comic book guff with a cast who should all have been doing better things. 4/10

Attn: ITV 4 continuity announcer.

In which known galaxy is Firefox considered a "cold war classic"? 3/10

Not bad but I've never read the books. Friends who have hate the movie.

Zero Dark Thirty - 9/10

Thought provoking, kept my attention the whole way through. Not my favourite of the Oscar contenders I've seen though.

The Avengers

<snip>

Cinema is dead.
Well, of course you're going to think that if you go and watch Hollywood franchise crap like that...

Alien. First time I'd seen it in about 8-10 years I think. Had totally forgotten nearly everything about it, so it was excellent to watch this again. Just a wonderful wonderful film. Not much else needs to be said really. 9.5/10

Hit and Run - 4/10

2 irritating cops and and some tedious dialogue spoilt what could have been a fun film.

I'm on re-watching the Hornblower tv movies atm. I bought the re-mastered boxset, which is quite an improvement over the older set in terms of picture quality (it also has subtitles). I've just watched the fourth one, 'The Frogs and the Lobsters'. It's all good stuff.

Hope they eventually decide to make a few more. There isn't really much else like it available. 'Sharpe', and 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', and...... not much else.

The Kid with a Bike (Le gamin au velo) - 7.5/10 This is about a boy who doesn't have the best of starts in life so goes a bit off the rails. And then he gets back on the rails due to the kindness of a hairdresser. (Lovefilms in French with English subtitles and is a film from Belgium).

Overall, I enjoyed it and it is a feel good movie without being overly sentimental. I would recommend it. Although I felt some scenes of the boy riding his bike could easily have been cut out of the film and nothing would have been lost.

Sky fall - not sure what to give it! Maybe an 8, or a 5.

They should have devolped and scripted Bardem a lot better IMO, bit of a waste of a great actor.

In the last week.....

Prometheus 5/10

Skyfall 8.5/10

First Blood 8/10

Rocky (1) 9/10

Rocky Balboa 8/10

Raging Bull 5/10
It's been a while since I've felt so disappointed after watching a movie. I've never seen Raging Bull until yesterday and I don't know why so many consider it a classic. But that's just my opinion

A Good Day to Die Hard
Woeful in comparison to the original and fares little better against the sequels

As a generic action movie 5/10
One of the worst movies I have ever seen. They have ruined the franchise, they need to stop now. The first 3 were brilliant even 4th one was ok but this was awful. 2/10.

The Pianist - Amazing. Always been moved by this one and it remains one of my favourite films. 9.5/10

Ice Age 4 - Similar to the others, easy watch kiddy animation with some funny bits.

Silver Linings Playbook - well made, but it's the performances that really make it a good movie. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper deserve all the nominations they've got. 8.5/10
