New films I've seen recently

Hitchcock - 5/10 Ok,but felt more of a TV movie.Quite uneventful. You're better off just watching Psycho again. An extra point given though for Scarlett Johansson being so hot

Tha Bay - 5/10 Found footage style horror that is a bit different about a town whose water supply is infected and everyone starts rotting and going nuts.Ok,but ultimately forgettable.

Wreck It Ralph - 5/10 The usual Pixar fare.Nowhere near as good as the Toy Story films,Wall-E or Finding Nemo though.

Old films I've seen recently

Basket Case (1982) - 7/10 I hadn't seen this since I was a kid.It has cheepo 80's effects but that somehow adds to it's charm.Much more entertaining and creepy than the new horrors I've watched lately (but maybe the nostalga factor helped).

Network (1976) - 8/10 Great satire about a news anchor who is going to get fired for low ratings and goes nuts on the air prompting his ratings to go up.It's funny watching it now because although it was meant as over the top when they made it,now these crazy news anchors actually exist in America. It's as if Fox news used this movie as a blueprint lol.

Punch Drunk Love (2002) - 4/10 Strange romantic comedy with Adam Sandler.I'd heard it was really good, but found it really bland.

Spoorloos (the vanishing) (1988) - 8/10 Brilliant Dutch thriller/horror about a guy whose girlfriend gets abducted when they're on vacation. He spends the next few years trying to find her,and is being sent postcards from the person who abduted her promising to reaveal to him what has happened to her. This film is awesome and takes a unique approach in that it shows nearly as much from the view point of the abductor as it does the guy looking for his girlfriend. It's best to know as little as possible about this film before you see it.

in bruges. 4/10.

poorly scripted uk gangster flick with the single "plot twist" horribly obvious. setting it in Bruges is a stupid gimmick with no connection to the story.
Spoiler

Side Effects - Rooney Mara and Jude Law - stellar! Well-told suspenseful story with awesome cinematography to boot - 8/10

Films recently watched courtesy of DS members' recommendations:

Zodiac - Great performances, suspenseful and well-paced - 9/10

Copycat - Liked the story but the killer lacked presence for me - 7/10

Arlington Road - Solid watch but one or two gaping plot holes and a dodgy performance from Jeff Bridges. Very unique ending! - 7.5/10

Unthinkable - Thought provoking like most great dramas are - 8/10

Sister (L'enfant d'en haut) - Meh. Lea Seydoux is pretty mediocre, I must say. 6.5/10

The Hunt (Jagten) - the plot is bonkers. Superb acting by Mads Mikkelsen. 8.5/10

Yup. Rushed to the cinema at the time in response to the hype surrounding it (as well as its cast list) and was greatly underwhelmed...

Paradise Lost, aka Turistas [2006]. Director: John Stockwell

5/10

The Brazilian tourist board weren't amused by this tale of backpackers abducted by a surgeon looking for spare organs.

Slap Shot (1977) - 8/10. Third time I have seen this black comedy film, and the amount of swearing - especially whenever Paul Newman swore like a sailor - and violence still startled me. I'm pretty sure there's more swearing in this than The Warriors and Mean Streets combined. Still a great film, though. Makes me want to watch Breaking Away, another underrated 1970s gem.

Resident Evil: Extinction - 7/10.

I decided to watch this series for the first time. It generally seems to get negative comments but so far I'm enjoying it. I prefer Apocalypse so far, but I still liked this one.
