iPad email help please!

Hello you clever people - does anyone have any advice on iPad's and emails? I'm stumped.

I use a virgin.net email (POP3) as my main email account and have it synced up with my phone/laptop no problem, emails are automatically downloaded to both and are independent of each other so if I delete one from the phone it's still in outlook etc. However, I can't get my iPad to do the same. After much searching I found the right details to put in to get the email downloaded onto my iPad, but it a.) won't let me send anything and b.) if the iPad is on, all emails will go there directly and not to my outlook on my laptop. It's really annoying as I keep missing things and can't then forward them on as...I can't send either!

I have been searching for a solution, I've tried all the settings and nothing works. It's obviously something to do with taking them off the server, but I have 'do not delete' checked. What am I doing wrong? Any help gratefully appreciated!

If you're using multiple clients then you really need to use IMAP rather than POP3. Virginmedia can be set up for IMAP.

Hi creme

Works ok with POP3.

On iPad go to:

Settings
Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Select you email account
Advanced
Delete from server - Never

This is on original iPad - probably the same on more recent models. Apologies if you've already tried this. Can't really help with your not sending problem.

Hi Dave,

Thanks, yeah I have that setting saved - it clearly doesn't delete from teh server as they are delivered to my android phone no problem, just not outlook. That plus the not being able to send thing makes me think I have the wrong pop3 info in there, but I've double checked with the virgin info page and those are the correct numbers! Ach, very confusing.

I may have some input on the not sending problem.

Do you have a virginmedia email address or an ntlworld email address?

If you have an ntlworld.com email address then you have to use a "trick" to send your emails via the virginmedia server rather than the ntlworld.com server.

I found this page to be really useful.

(As usual the official virgin media help pages are wrong, or at best, incomplete )

I should mention as well, that if you do follow these instructions then one of the stages - I think it's the stage where you are waiting for the iPad to find that it can't send on the standard port - takes a long time. By long I mean 10-15 minutes During this time don't power off the iPad, just wait patiently.

You need "recent mode", see here: http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...CUSTOMER_TYPE=

If you just set never delete from server then the first email client to read the email will mark it as read and the next one will not see it.

The alternative is to use imap and then the email list will look the same on everything, usually imap is the best for multiple clients but you pays your money...
