Down to #82 after only 5 weeks on the chart and with 5 week sales of just 34k

Deary me. That is total disaster! There will be no tour to speak of with sales figures like those. It'll be yet more gigs at his local boozer for fan club members.

Anyway, the thing is, Matt was an X Factor winner for whom many predicted great things. He is the previous act most closely resembling James Arthur and whilst he was less likeable than James, a total arse in fact, he was better looking and had a much, much better voice. He also had a history in indi music, having recorded two self-written albums. All of which begs the question: if Matt couldn't be sold to the public, how on earth will they sell Quasimodo boy?

Lazy comparison.

Because James played a Guitar you compare him to Matt Cardle.

They don't sound alike, they do different music, have different styles, appeal to different age groups. It's a nonsense comparison.

You have a lovely way with words. Hard to understand why some people would have such a low opinion of DS users

I think we need to put them on credibility scales.

Cardle was last year's credible artist.
Arthur is this year's.

^ These statements are qualified by alleged. DO NOT SUE ME!

No it isn't. As contestants they both did what they were told to do and the songs haven't been that far apart. The obvious connection is the word 'credible'. It was applied to Matt (by himself on occasion) and it is being applied to James. Yes it is ludicrous that playing basic chords on a guitar gets you the tag 'credible' but it just goes to show how musically ignorant the whole show is. The comparison stands and is being actively promoted by those attempting to line James up for the win.

He didn't but only because he was BES (before Ed Sheeran). Urban acoustic is where it's at now mate! Matt was born too soon. Current or not, I still predict cardlesque album sales for tubby Arthur though.

It's not a disaster in Indie terms and he is still top ten after 5 weeks in the indie chart. The difference is that XF seems to be pushing James and over hyping him perhaps in the same way they did 1D. I don't see any similarity with Matt, I am a fan of Matt but can't abide James Arthur vocally or personality wise. I think he is way to be for his own boots from what I see on twitter and needs to reign his ego in! He slurs through his songs and has a 'density' about him that I can't take to at all.

This 'indi terms' thing? You do realise that he's only working in 'indi terms' because his proper label dumped him due to poor (sub-platinum) sales of his massively hyped winner's album?

The way things are going, he could wind up freezing or starving to death in a bus stop or shop doorway. You'll walk past and say: "oh it's ok Matt. In indi terms you're one of life's high achievers!"

Please DS, we have the appreciation threads, can we have some disappreciation threads so people like Popsmartz can talk negatively to their hearts content and the rest of us can avoid that area?

Let it go, Popsmartz - and that smilie was so insincere, you just as well had put a . Yes I could just have not read the thread, but the main part of the forum would be so much more positive an opinion if it could be truly objective.

So what about it DS? Let's have a section where people can moan about individual to their sycophants in a designated area?

this is a discussion forum. why should "disappreciation threads" be special and not answered with opposing view?

No similarities whatsoever. Different type of music for one, I can't remember Matt Cardle being endorsed by a lot of the people in the music industry. James will probably work with Labrinth who is doing well at the moment and is signed to Syco.

It doesn't matter one mad frog's arse what number he got to does it? How many copies he sells is all that matters (to the bean counters who will decide his future) and if the figures don't miraculously start picking up (and we both know they wont) he'll be back on Myspace by April. It's a tough business. You do not like me pointing out and reasonably speculating upon hard facts. That's fine but trying to put positive spin on figures like these is pure, pure folly.

^^^This. James' style of music is current, that's the main difference. His target market is not the same as Cardle's.

Hmmm.. and I can remember Matt's fans telling us he'd be working with all manner of established artists on both sides of the atlantic. He didn't. They said he'd be used to launch the X Factor brand in the US. He wasn't. They said his ultra-credible, Barlow-penned single 'Run For Your Life' would become the anthem of the London olympiad. It didn't. Need I go on? We've heard all of this credibility knocks cobblers on here before. Let's just wait and see shall we?

Yes but that was just wishful thinking on the part of cardle's fans. Labrinth has met James and don't forget he invited him on stage at his gig. I may be wrong, we'll just have to wait and see. Also I don't think James has ever called himself credible.

Be careful what you wish for!

Perhaps he'll release a remix of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
