...I'm still using my trusty Nokia 5800 purchased from new.
T-Mobile £10 monthly top up with unlimited Internet and unlimited texts.
Still get 3 to 4 days of battery with 24/7 synced to my PC Google mail account...occasional internet browsing..listen to radio now and then...

Is it 'really' worth getting a 'modern' smart phone ?

I'd love something for a change ...price not really a problem..

Do all these new 'smartphones' need charging every day ?

Any suggestions ---first - is it worth it?
second - if so -what's the best phone : battery life ect / and overall 'gee whizz factor' ?

On the battery life question, the answer is yes, you will need to charge a smartphone every day. 1-2 days if you're lucky and don't use it much. You won't get 3-4 days on a charge from any iPhone, Android phone or Windows Phone smartphone.

I get 3 days out of my Lumia 800, but I do not use it a lot, just emails, some browsing, occasional texts, calls, rarely any apps.

It varies. My girlfriend can get 3 days out of her iPhone 4. But my 3GS running the latest iOS will run out of charge from full in half a day if I use apps.

Currently waiting from my Nokia upgrade though

Hi advid - I had a 5800 for a year 2009 - 2010. I quite enjoyed it at the time but I had a play with one a couple of months ago and was shocked by it quite frankly. Anyway for the last 2 and a bit years I have had several Android phones. Even the first I got, an Orange San Francisco, was leagues ahead of the 5800 in usability. The reason I didn't use my 5800 that much was because web browsing etc was not a pleasant experience. It did have a reasonable camera though and yes the battery life is good, partly down to the fact it does not lend itself to intensive use and partly down to Symbian being dang efficient.

You can pick up a cheap Android (new) or iPhone (used) and dip your toe in the water. Nokia do some cheap Windows Phone devices as well (the Lumia 800 is a bargain right now) if you feel any brand loyalty. Just about any smart phone will last three days – if you do not use it that is. The thing is when you have a phone with a nice big capacitive screen and loads of available apps you will use it lots. And then you will have to charge it every night, which is not a problem for most of us as we usually have access to electricity in our homes. My point is don’t get up on battery life, all a phone needs to do is last till bed time (but hey I would also love my phone to last for days but that is not an option – if battery life is your killer feature get a Motorola Razr Maxx).

Presumably that was with the built in browser? If you had installed Opera on it you would have had a much slicker experience although for some reason I still need to use the built in browser with iPlayer as it doesn't play with Opera.

I installed Opera early on. Yes it was (is) better than the stock browser but it still like putting lipstick on a pig. A small resistive screen does not make a slick experience.

That's actually not true, my s3 does 3 days of light use. I turn off bluetooth, wifi, auto syncing, push email as I check it with the gmail app, NFC, GPS and keep the screen at just average brightness and it'll last a good 3 days of light use.

Light use I'm counting as a few calls a day, a few texts, 20 minutes of streaming, 30 mins of sceen on time and the rest on standby and it'll last 3 days.

iPhone 5 also survives 3 days of light use. If you use it all the time obviously it will die within 24 hours. I never used to use my old Nokia as much as i now use my iPhone i think people forget this..

^This.

If you're going to get a phone that you actually use, then battery won't last 3 days. I know someone who had an older Nokia and who used it keep it switched off except for when she needed to make a call. She charged it about twice a month. She has an iPhone 4 now, uses it for a multitude of purposes on a daily basis and has to charge every night.

I don't see the point in having a smartphone if you're barely going to use it. If battery life is primary and you only want a bit of calls and texting, the OP would be better off with a Blackberry Curve!

..as i've already mentioned - my Nokia is on 24/7 for emails and Internet use (occasional iplayer/music/browse).... and gives me 3 to 4 days of power before a re-charge...Still with the original battery by the way !
I'm was just thinking about 'possibly' going for an all singing /dancing new phone but - really I don't think i'll be able to do any more than I'm doing now... I really only use it to call/text/reply to emails - NOT for watching films or games and stuff and downloading zillions of aps...!
I can do all that I really want on the Nokia.
It was just a thought that a new phone might be quicker at web access ect. BUT if it's go to be charged every day (or perhaps even twice) if its running 24/7 then perhaps the Nokia will do me 'til it conks out on me....

Different concepts of light use there I think. I did get my 4 days with everything off but what is the point?
