Downloading Channel 4 shows from Youtube
Have they started encrypting the shows to prevent downloading? That's pretty weak.
I had started to save all the Jamie Oliver's 15 Minute Meals vids to play on my phone while I cooked them, but now it wont seem to let me. Have they came up with some way to prevent me downloading them or am I just using crappy out of date software? |

As long as I pay my TV licence and watch the adverts I should be entitled to save a copy of the episode on my PC, just like I could tape the episode at home

Although I know where you are going, I don't see how paying a license fee, which funds the BBC, should have anything to do with Channel 4. When you shop at Tesco's, do you expect to also have free access to M&S shelves?
The adverts you speak of are what finances Channel 4, that and other sponsorship deals, along with sales of their back catalogue and Film4 on-demand. You are still entitled to record their live shows via a PVR or even an old video cassette recorder. But Channel 4 are not obliged to offer you free access to download their shows to keep just because you pay another organization money for the other services. Why not just record on a PVR? Hell, these days you can buy an amazing YouView box, which includes a PVR as well as all the catchup content from the terrestrial services beautifully interwoven into their UI. |

They should never have got rid of the option of being able to download programmes on 4od itself though. It was very useful to be able to watch programmes while offline. Something that BBC iplayer and Sky Go manage to let you still do.

I agree, this is an important feature for these apps, and would make them much more usable as mobile viewing devices. Especially when traveling. I was flying last week and watched some iPlayer shows on the plane that I downloaded for offline viewing. It was fantastic. How great that will be when 4oD offer this as well. I just hope when they say next year, it is 1st quarter, not the 4th. |

Isn't there free software that will allow you to download and save anything? Freecorder 7 does it for me, but I haven't tried 4od so don't know if that's the answer.
