With New Year coming up I thought it might be a good idea to name films set at New Year. After all we always have the Christmas films thread. So what films are set at New year or mostly at New Year? An obvious recent one is New Years Eve.

I think End OF Days was set at the millennium.

What other films are set at New Year or maybe start at Christmas and end or include New Year?

Most obvious example must be New year's eve.

Trading Places starts off before Christmas and then runs onto the New Year.

And with a canny bit of scheduling it's on Sky Movies tomorrow.

Happy New Year (2014)
Happy New Year (2011)
Happy New Year (2008)
Happy New Year (1987)
Happy New Year (1986)
Happy New Year (1973)

And that's just the features on IMDb. There are shorts & TV Movies too. At least some of them must have a January 1st theme.

I can only think of four:

Ocean's Eleven
Sunset Boulevard
The Apartment (the last reel)
Better Luck Tomorrow (the climax)

I always think that takes place during Christmas, even though I do remember the New Year's Eve countdown. Odd, eh.

The giant Christmas tree might be a factor.

Good point. That's probably why.

Not sure either of these are strictly in line with the question, but:

The Time Machine (the 1960 version) starts on Dec 31 1899, moves forward to the year 802701 and returns to January 5th 1900!

If I remember correctly, The Fourth Protocol starts with a burglary being carried out with the noise of New Year's celebrations intended to hide what's going on.

Just remembered a british comedy film from 1983 called Party Party. Set at a New Years eve party it starred Karl Howman, Daniel Peacick and Perry Fenwick. Just looked it up on wikipedia and it also features Nick Berry, Clive Mantle and Caroline Quentim all in early roles before they were well known. I vaguely recall renting it back then but have never seen it again. I think C4 showed it late one night a few years ago. Anyone else remember it?

200 Cigarettes, my favourite movie about NYE and our family tradition that we watch it every year.

Very funny hidden gem, uplifting, with a great cast, about a bunch of people going to a party in New York in the early 80s.

It went straight to video in this country if I recall correctly, but it is far, far superior to the dross of New Years Eve (which has a similar set up and location, and an all-star cast)

Edited to add: also, The Holiday finishes with a New Year's Eve celebration scene
