Im pretty pissed about backwards compatablity this gen
I have GTA vice+San andreas, buffy, code veronica ,silent hill etc lots of old games id like to play again but either have to wait till ps releases it on the store or the company does a HD remake. Which costs me more money for something i already bought 10 years ago

With this gen the games have been amazing with great storys that you could play again and again

If Ps4 does not have backwards compat to ps3 ill be majorly pissed having to buy these gens games again aswell its crazy

I know people will say just buya ps2 if you wanna play those games but imo it should be standard now to play all your games on 1 device

I wouldn't be impressed if the 720 and PS4 aren't backwards compatible, especially with all the downloaded games I've amassed in the past 6 years!

Backwards compatability doesn't bother me too much, but it would be a nice addition. In saying that, if it was to siginificantly raise the price then I wouldn't want it.

I can't see it happening. At least not with the NeXtBox, they didn't make that mistake this gen and don't know why Sony didn't do it.

From all accounts the PS4 / Orbis wont be backward compatiable with the discs but they will be using Gakai to allow it.

If the new generation don't have backward compatibility, why on earth would i not keep a current generation console to avoid any problems

Normally Backwards compatibility doesn't really bother me as I tend to play games on there original platform.

However since I'm starting to run out of space to put console's the next-gen been backwards compatible would be a help.

If the PS4 is backwards compatible I might be tempted to buy one to play the console exclusives i have missed out on over this gen's years.

BC would be a nice bonus in the next PlayStation, but mainly because I have more (unplayed) PS3 games than I can shake a stick at which is the complete opposite of my PS2.

Without BC, I would be focusing on what games it was launching with. A new Killzone, something mouth watering from Sony Santa Monica and/or Naughty Dog along with Ridge Racer 8 (a proper RR, not like Unbounded) and I will pre-order it. If none of those are available at launch then I can hold off for a few months to clear my ever growing PS3 backlog.

Backwards compatibility at first sight seems a must, but having said that, once I got a PS2, apart from initially trying it out to see if it worked, I never once went back and used it to play a PS1 game again. Exactly the same thing happened with my first gen PS3. Never once played a PS2 game in anger. So, I'm kinda coming to the conclusion that it's something of a mirage. Something you think you really want, but in reality never actually use. So from now on I'm not even going to consider it when buying new gear.

Regards

Mark

But for continueing franchises its a pain.
Like GTA, resident evil then from this gen we will have
Uncharted 1-3 dead space 1-3 im sure will carry on into the next gen with there 4th entrys or whatever same goes for alot more games the new tomb raider if a sucess will be carrying on its second game on the new consoles therefore if backwards compat is not on the new consoles we wont be able to play them unless you keep your PS3 hanging around

I really hope they are backward compatible, especially with network games. If the next system is not compatible with disc based games I can sell them on (Should I want to) but I cant do anything with downloads.

If network games are not compatible it will probably effect my future purchasing of digital games a lot more than it will effect my chances of buying the next generation system.

In the digital era backward compatibly should be standard IMHO even if its done via the Cloud.

It's of no concern to me as i have no intention of selling or dismissing my current gen console. Though it would be a nice bonus feature, so i don't have to draw out the previous console to play games.

Yes, but i will be totally pissed if they don't. This will mean that all the servers for the old games will close and i will not have a chance at getting the online achievements for older games. Yes i am an achievement loser, but i like to complete my games fully.

Not straight away because if the Wii U price is anything to go by, I'll probably have to trade my current consoles to afford them. If there's no backwards compatability, I'll be hanging onto my 360/PS3 and waiting for the inevitable price drops.

I imagine they'll retain compatability for XBLA/PSN titles at least though. Otherwise they can kiss goodbye to any consumer support for digital distribution in the future.

I certainly wouldn't buy as quickly.
BC is the main reason I bought the Wii U so early.

You can kiss PS3 BC goodbye in the PS4.

They're ditching the Cell components and going with traditional PC parts, which makes it almost impossible to run PS3 games that were based on the Cell architecture.

Nope I won't care as I don't generally sell my consoles. It would be a nice perk though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed the next Xbox has the feature since I already have such a great library of games and it would be great to play it all on the one system alongside brand new releases.

Rumour has it that PS3 games will be playable via streaming, or by using a plug-in component.

I still play older games fairly regularly, But as I said earlier in the thread I tend to play them on the original platform.
Have used my PS3 to play PS1 games a dozen times though.

Still plenty of old games out there which I want to play that I missed out on when they were new. I got Forbidden Siren 2, Metal Slug 4 & Syphon Filter The omega Strain for PS2 a few weeks ago.
