Apple's share price has fallen 6% to $538.79 on the NASDAQ. The tumble took Apple's market cap down to $506.84bn, well below the dizzy heights of $705.07 billion reached in September 2012. Yesterday saw a $34.8 billion wiped off the total value of the company in one day.

Investors cited fears about competition in the mobile market and the threat from both Android and Nokia/Windows as factors in the fall.

No doubt Apple will be on the phone to the layers to try and kill the competition thought some more patent trolling

Android must be destroyed Saint Steve's Holy War isnt over yet.....

'Patent trolling' is where companies rely on revenue from patent licenses as their only / primary income, and are usually non-practising entities.

IPCom are an example of such a company.

All apple needs to do is genuinely innovate & produce some different looking product ... then share value will rise again ... new versions of i products could appear at almost Samsung like speeds if they reversed their decision to litigate more than they innovate

No patent troll are exactly what apple are those who file particularly aggressive law suits. Usually preying on unsuspecting companies who have little knowledge they have infringed.

The days of apple as we know them I predict are over, although the following of the loyal will still be the envy of many companies.

Nope, the term stems from a patent troll that appeared in a video warning about the practice. The key element is the aggressive pursuit of licensing revenue.

Exactly the aggressive pursuit of patents for e.g.

Focuses its efforts solely on enforcing patent rights;

Asserts patent infringement claims against non-copiers or against a large industry that is composed of non-copiers

Remind you of anyone?

They've spent too much time suing everyone else and not enough time ensuring their place in the market. Their products arguably only sell because of the name, not their capabilities, and Apple are starting to fall out of fashion, so I'm not surprised cracks are beginning to show. This company has had many ups and downs in the past. Maybe it will be Google's turn to save them from bankruptcy next time.

I think any day now Tim Cook will go. We need somebody at the top who is going to innovate like crazy and amaze us, shake things up and continue to evolve, not chase patents and bring out the same old stuff.

The retail experience should have been continuing to evolve. We should have seen a new product in the pipeline, the iPad mini should really have had a retina screen etc...

People are just not wowed by Apple any more, and the patent trolling has gone down like a lead balloon with the public.

Not the same.

A "patent troll" is e.g. a company that buys up patents solely to then pursue action against others for allegedly infringing them, enforces patents but does not manufacture the patented product itself, etc. etc.

Although Apple has gone OTT with its patent litigation, it has not acted like a "patent troll" (plus, of course, they're all bloody doing it! Samsung and the rest are hardly saints, either)

Apple is not "focussing its efforts solely on enforcing patent rights", nor is it "asserting patent infringement claims against non-copiers or against a large industry that is composed of non-copiers".

Does the majority of the public really care about all the patent nonsense? I doubt it.

Plus, that and the "lack of a wow factor" haven't stopped the iPad and iPhone from continuing to sell shitloads...

Well friends who I wouldn't class as interested in this stuff are talking about it, and I've noticed a lot more dislike for Apple since this has been in the news.

The Samsung S3 is outselling the iPhone, even in the iPhone release period when the S3 had been out for a while and with the iPhone being a major release, not the 'S'.

The S3 outsold the iPhone for one quarter, I think. And that was in the quarter where the iPhone 5 was available for a few days only.

Certainly in the UK it's outselling the iPhone.

Here's the December sales, it's in 8th place according to uswitch who gather the data.

Not the uSwitch figures AGAIN. They're based on deal popularity and sales, with no indication of the weighting given to each. Also, it doesn't include sales directly from Apple.

Absolutely no chance that the S3 is outselling the iPhone 5, and we'll see that when the actual sales figures are released.

Well, considering the number of units sold only in the first three days of the iPhone 5, it's fairly obvious. The sales figures will prove it, as usual.

The 4S probably isn't outselling the 5. In fact, it almost certainly isn't.

We'll see if the iPhone 5 still sells as well as the s3 that many months after launch as the s3 has been out a long time now.

This problem of wow factor for the 5 seems to be reflected in sales. Around 68% of new iPhone sales are the 5 where the 4s at the same time last year was running at around 90% seemingly many are happy to take the cheaper option and are not as convinced with the 5.
