If autotune didn't exist
I'm talking autotune and basically any other programs that make your voice sound different. What artists do you think just wouldn't be artists in the first place? I know Cheryl Cole, Ke$ha are good examples but who else?

Cheryl Cole would still be around. She's from Girls Aloud, and they won a talent show. They still would've won and got their record deal, even if autotune didn't exist.
If you read up about how Ke$ha got her record deal, I think she's still have made it as a pop star aswell. Although Tik Tok would've been nowhere near as popular without the autotune. There's thousands of beautiful women who are good singers. If autotune didn't exist, pop music would still be just a load of hot women wearing no clothes singing electropop songs. |

Ke$ha doesn't use autotune as a means to improve her vocals, she uses it as more of a technique, like voice manipulation, it works very well and is her style. She doesn't need the autotune however.
Cheryl Cole whilst still being known probably wouldn't have done as well considering she uses it to improve her vocals and not as a technique. |

These artists would just use a crowd of backing vocalists (as some do even now) and loads of harmonies to disguise their poor vocals. That's how the likes of Paula Abdul, Sinitta etc got by, and I don't think it would have been any different now had pitch correction software not been developed.

Different artists use it for different reasons. Some use it because they can't sing on key, but lots use it for effect especially in dance/electronic music. If it didn't exist, a lot of electro pop and dance records couldn't be made and music would be very different today.
Technology always moves forward and it useless to fight it. All technology can be used in an artistic way or in a bad boring way. |

I don't think it would make a difference tbh. People like Justin bieber and Chris brown sound like shit even with the auto tune and people still like them. As long as they have the image and the right promotion they would be fine.

if autotune didnt exist...
ke$ha and britney on record wouldnt sound quite the same lady gaga would not be able to claim live vocals for every perofrmance as her live pre recorded vocals with auto tune wouldnt be so convincing madonna would not be able to sing gang bang and revolver live michael buble would showca\se that he isnt the smartest use of live auto tune and that his vocal stength has declined most remale artists such as pink, jessie j, rita ora, rihanna, katty perry etc. ... wouldnt sound so samey? will.i.am would be seriously mediocre but with good melodies nicki minaj would be seriously mediocre but with good melodies but most of all the natural voice with all its warmth and character would return to the forefront god bless creativity |

Owl City Not to mention, imagine how crap Boom Boom Pow would've sounded without autotune. The whole reason that song is so catchy was because of the autotune. |

Owl City as for adam young aka owl city, the guy is a talented musician so could have been a producer or part of a band. if you remember the old days of keyboard/synth music of the 80s, some of the best tunes were from people who weren't necesarily the greatest vocalists, but they had a good tune it's really the solo vocalists who rely on image who would suffer, those who can't play instruments like britney. rappers can get by without autotune so nicki minaj would be fine but autotune has been around for many years, long before cher did that awful song (which was created by mistake) |

I get confused with what auto tune actually is meant to be ...
People seem to refer to it as making a voice sound 'electro' for want of a better word, like Ke$ha, will.i.am etc... So esentially 'special effects' vocals. Then it seems to be refered to making a 'bad' singer sound 'good' as people say Cheryl Cole does for example. Personally I don't mind the first one, I like that bit of creativity with music, not all songs have to have a musical instrument core, as opposed to a computer based one. I do realise my wording might be wrong, I'm far from a musical expert! |

Ke$ha uses it for effect
will.i,am uses it because he cant sing (he has admitted he cant before) Cheryl uses it to improve her weak vocals (like layering vocals) Almost all artists use autotune to cover bum notes or ones they cant hit and molodyne (e.g. Jason Derulo uses it to cover up the fact he is a poor singer). Some artists like Ke$ha and T-Pain use it more than this to make a louder/more robotic/abrasive voice. Autotune is basically an instrument, some would struggle without it whilst some would be fine. |

Maybe auto-tune works in a club but for me they all sound like ducks, atrocious.
It's like in the beginning of the CD era, the string sections by classical records did sound artificial. |

If it sounds auto tuned, it's a deliberate effect.
I didn't realise until recently when I met a few music producers. But they played me songs where I could not tell at all that auto tune had been used. I actually thought wow, these people can really sing, and then they burst my bubble by telling me that they were actually really awful singers and it was fixed with auto tune. It was singer songwriter types, Ed Sheeranish. You would never have guessed. So basically, I don't think music would be that different, it would just be tougher to fake it so maybe the music scene would have a few more average looking joes around who were picked for their talent over their looks. |

Perhaps it's just me getting old, but to my ears almost all these new boy singers and boy bands have vocals that sound virtually identical, and I blame autotune. It seems to add a kind of 'flat', shouting quality to the voice, removing most of the original timbre.
I'm convinced that their raw voices would be deemed too poor to bother with. |

I used to think that her voice was given that effect just because it sounded cool with the upbeat tune. It was years before I realised that what I now know to be autotuning was done because the artist couldn't hit all the notes!
