Not on the strength of the last one.

As an erstwhile fan, this was without a shadow of doubt, the biggest Christmas TV dissappointment in years.

It became a parody of itself. The real life cutting edge cynisism was replaced by unbelievable farce. I was really surprised and dissappointed in equal measures that Cash & Aherne allowed this sub-standard piece of work anywhere near a studio.

Unless already legally obliged to do so, there is no way the BBC will be comissioning another of these. It was terrible ”

I think I read it was the opposite way around and they were legally oblidged to provide a final christmas special, which didn't happen the year before because they couldn't be bothered completing it, and under pressure, they threw this one together.

I was so disappointed, I haven't even bothered to watch the last half which i fell asleep during as I couldn't see how it was going to pick up with such a dire story line.

Well that would certainly make sense if it was the case but I can't for the life of me think this was written with the belief that it could secure future commissions

I thoroughly enjoyed Restless, went unde the radar a bit but deserves plenty of praise.

There were plenty of people who still liked it. It seems the newer viewers who were too young or didn't catch the original series loved it but the older viewers who saw the series first time round hated it.

The ratings were still excellent and if they want to make more i'm sure the Beeb will let them.

Well I'm happy to have a sporting bet with you that it doesn't happen. As for the viewing figures, surely this is a reflection in part of (a) past glories and (b) eager anticipation of some decent comedy. The only other thing of note in terms of 'established' comedy was Outnumbered but that too is beginning to lose its innocent charm, which is inevitable given the children's advancing years. Of the rest Miranda is watchable but Mrs Browns Boys is awful. The acting is dreadful and every joke can be anticipated well in advance.

I came to the Royle Family late, the first episode I wanted being the 2009 Christmas Special, The Golden Egg Cup. I have enjoyed all the Christmas Specials since, including the last. Perhaps people who watched the actual series have a different view.

If you do not contribute to this thread normally then I suggest you refrain from your rudeness. The Xmas RT Countdown Thread is a traditional occurrence each year for the people who contribute to it get a lot of pleasure chatting, speculating and arguing about the time of year they like best.

If you can't tolerate or accept other people's pleasures and pastimes, then in your own words, get a life.

I believe Ricky Tomlinson was interviewed shortly before Christmas and he seemed to be very adamant that a further Special was going to be filmed for Christmas 2013, as per usual, no official confirmation from the BBC, with The Royle Family, it just seems to appear in the schedule, I think this is due to the fact that Caroline and Craig are somewhat tricky to nail down until the last minute, it's the way they role!! If thats the case, and with a solid 10 or so million viewers every year, the Beeb will be happy to put up with them!!

You must watch the 2008 special 'new sofa' - it's my favourite and i found it hillarious. All others have disappointed me since, but then that could have been because I enjoyed this so much! It's on you tube over a couple of parts.

I watched the Snowman & the snowdog again over the weekend before it disappeared off 4OD, and I found it a bit depressing to begin with, without the glow of christmas around. This is why...

- They move to the original farmhouse, but it's been built around with lots of other houses and now has a tiny garden and now doesn't look like the lovely warm farm house it was.

- The boys dog is old and dies at the start, and shows them burying it and looking very sad

- Then my 4 yr old realised the boy live only with his mum, and asked where his dad was!

We watched it to the end but it's not a patch on the Snowman and I won't be buying the DVD when it's released, I'm going to keep with the traditional

Royle Family : -

Whilst I agree that it is not as regally brilliant as it once was, I still think it is one of the best comedies on tv. When it started in the late 90's it was truly revolutionary - realistic characters in the most real situation, regular pauses in scenes whilst they watch the tv, nearly all the scenes in occur in the living room with the tv always on, sharp, contemporary dialogue etc. The first sitcom without a situation directing the comedy.

It has definintely played itself out and (after the 2nd series) evolved into a different comedy altogether - the characters are now caricatures, it no longer carries that degree of authenticity that it had and has been a little disappointing at times. However, the 2010 special was very, very good and the last christmas special needs to be watched in its entirety to be fully appreciated.

I would also point out that they do produce christmas specials that centre on christmas (golden egg cup excepted). They have given us some of the best ever christmas tv specials and (in consideration of the bbc's continued preference to bring back classic comedies 'just one more time' rather than produce any decent new comedies) come back in far better shape than some others - to the manor born anyone?

Thats a very good point you make wizzywick . There are plenty of places both on Digital Spy and else where on the internet where people can read and discuss serious issues. The Radio Times Christmas Countdown threads are harmless light relief from everyday stress.
