iPhone 5 and travelling abroad
subversive
09-12-2012
Hi,

I have a iPhone 5 which I am hoping to take with me while I am on holiday in Mauritius and Duba over the next two weeks.

As I understand, if I leave the phone as it is, I will be charged for data roaming, etc.

How if I turn off Mobile Data, Data Roaming and 3G, will I be fine?

I have heard of some bad stories where people are still charged even if they have these things turned off.

What is/are APN settings and why should they be deleted?

I only want to use the WiFi.

Some have suggested putting the phone in to airplane mode and turning wifi on.

However if I turn OFF Mobile data, Data roaming and 3G, I still should be able to make a call right?

Data roaming should be switched off by default anyway. Technically, that should be enough, but I usually switch mobile data off too. You don't need to do any more than that.

You only need to turn Data Roaming to off to ensure you don't get charged for data abroad. You don't need to switch the other two off.

No.

Data Roaming is off by default.

You should double check that it still is OFF though.

Don't bother with the "Enable 3G" toggle. It's not related to data.

There were some bugs in old versions of iOS that caused this. It's very rare for that to happen.

That wouldn't allow you to make/receive calls and text messages.

Cool.

I'll turn everything OFF and have air plane mode ON and if I wanna make a call, i'll just turn plane mode ON as and when.

Thanks

I would also switch mobile data off. When I went Spain even with data roaming off I was seeing slight data usage.

With mob data off u can call and text and use wifi. Just no mms

Thanks. Will do.

I will be turning everything off and putting it into air plane mode. Will have a second small pay as you go phone for incoming texts, etc..

I have found that the reception area and some eating places have wifi...so will just use wifi and whats app..might even try skype

I always switch on airplane mode then stick wifi back on. That way you still get wifi whenever it's available yet no chance of data charges at all. Still get FaceTime and iMessage that way too.
