Wondering when his last album of non-cover versions was released - 2001's Human! since then it's been

2002 - It Had to Be You: The Great American Songbook
2003 - As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook 2
2004 - Stardust: The Great American Songbook 3
2005 - Thanks for the Memory: The Great American Songbook, Volume IV
2006 - Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time
2009 - Soulbook
2010 - Fly Me to the Moon... The Great American Songbook Volume V
2012 - Merry Christmas, Baby

I'm not a fan but who'd have thought he'd end up a karaoke king - how uninspiring and frustrating for his fans, the dreaded covers albums is one of the worst things for me

I liked Rod in the 60s and 70s but his covers of the American Songbook classics are pretty rubbish...........well, the ones I've heard are

I just can't imagine how anyone who liked those songs would prefer his versions to Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra

Even Robbie does it better..............

My Grandmother is the only person I know who has the Rod Stewart American songbook albums, liked him in the 1970s and is a huge fan of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra too. I'm sure there are other people who like all of the above too but I think in the main most people either prefer classic recordings of the songs by artists including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Ella, Billie Holiday and Frank or more contemporary versions by artists including Robbie Williams and Rod Stewart. I dare say there are probably more people who prefer the classic recordings of songs too.

I heard Rod say he's releasing a new rock album next year. Definitely overdue in my opinion.

Mum likes him but she mostly has the Best Of compilations. She doesn't have any of his albums, at least not on CD. I was planning to buy her the Christmas album.

Rod in his heyday was a great frontman and songwriter. Rod should have steered clear of the American songbook, which is best left in the hands of Fitzgerald, Sinatra etc. Lets see what he's still got with his latest self-penned effort - (he's kind of put himself up against Bowie though...)

I don't see the problem. They have done very well for him. If they were bad, they wouldn't have sold

Classic songs murdered by some throaty old bloke with no range. I refer to these releases as Rod Stewart Lowers the Standards.

I like heavy rock and if one of those bands did endless cover CDs they would soon be out of buisiness both in sales and Live..

Having said that i suspect most of his fans like are older (like me) but unlike me they do not like originality obviously.

But like background stuff whilst ironing.

He was great in the 60s, and early 70s, but then all the fame seemed to go to his head, and I went right off him.

I actually played the Never A Dull Moment album yesterday, and it a fantastic record. My favourite Rod album I think.

I have quite a few friends who love Rod and would buy whatever he releases and going by his songbook sales there must be quite a few. I have heard some of the songs and whilst i agree he is no Sinatra his throaty rock voice does bring something different to the songs.

I saw him live about 10 years ago and he really knows how to get the audience on side and is a real show man

Who would have thought (amongst his era) he would be the one to be still selling out shows and recording all these years later. His song books aren't my cupof tea but good luck to him and why not. If people are still buying then why shouldn't he keep recording

You really can't knock the guy. I would still put him up there with Mick Jagger, and no one knocks him. He's lasted the test of time and has kept and improved his fanbase for 40 odd years. He's clear of drink and drugs, in good health, and has made millions from not having a great singing voice.

Credit where credit's due.

In part i agree, the Mick Jagger quote though i disagree with Mick does not rely on cover albums, even the stones on their recent greatest album had a new track on it to celebrate 50 years.
