Annie Sugden
I was remembering today Emmerdale of old, and I wondered what happened to Annie Sugden and the actress who played her. As a kid she is really the one I remember as I sat home in the afternoon off school.
I never understood why she went, if she was fired or quit. I do think it doesnt always work to wipe out the past but in Emmerdales case it worked. |

I don't know what happened to her, I stopped watching Emmerdale around the time she went and the Dingles joined. I do remember she was Brian Rix's daughter though.

I remember she got married and on her way back the plane crashed. But I thought she would pop back to see her son, isnt Jack her son? I thought maybe they killed her off screen.

Blimey I'm raking my memory here, she remarried and went to live in Spain, Joe was driving them to the airport after a visit home when the plane crashed, I think her new husband was killed. (I wish Granda Plus was still on, I could have refreshed my memory

)After this, Annie went back to live in Spain. Joe later joined her and was killed off-screen in a car accident. As far as I know Annie is still living in Spain, and I think Robert went to stay with her after Sarah died before coming back with a new head, but that was a while ago. About time someone mentioned Annie - sort it out Emmerdale

I just looked her up - she's still living in Spain with Amos Brierly (must have missed that episode).
In real life, she's 85 and living in Kent |

In the same vain what happened to Jacks eldest daughter, I know his son Jackie (?) is dead, but what’s his daughters name and where is she.
I know Annie’s daughter died, then her twin children died in a car crash, I’ve also been told Emmerdale Farm was almost entirely set around the Sugden family and of course was a day time agricultural soap – But even back in the 70’s they tackled issues like rape, murder and suicide (which seems weird for a soap on during the afternoon). Sorry for my ill-mannered ramble. |

I beleive the actress decided to leave of her own accord, preferring to stay out of the limelight. Think she released a book too. So I have no doubt if she wanted to return they'd let her. But I'm surprised no one mentions her these days, it's very odd. And killing off Joe was strange too...
It's a shame there aren't more characters left from its pre-1989 days, but it's not exactly needed given the show's change of direction, which can't be said for other soaps. The show kind of started again around 1989-1995, so I sort of count those people as "original characters"...if that makes any sense! e.g The Dingles, The Tates, The Windsors, Betty, Terry and a few others, have been there almost since the show's radical turnaround. But to have the likes of Joe and Annie would be nice, they were there since day one I think and left around the plane crash. Then you have the Skilbecks, also there around 20 years I think who were axed. Amos....there's quite a few. |

Sorry for my ill-mannered ramble. I used to think the guy who played Jackie was really good looking, I was very upset when he shot himself. He then appeared in that episode of Alan Partridge where he was his greatest fan and kept him hostage in that room covered in pictures |

If you were to draw a list up of the longest-serving cast members in Emmerdale history, I expect most of the top ten would be taken up by characters who left over 10 years ago...Annie, Joe, the Skilbecks etc
Though saying that, the top 3 must be Seth at 25 years, followed by Jack (the current one) at 24 years, then Alan Turner (22 years). |

I'm too young to remember the first Jack but I've seen pictures and Clive Hornby is the spitting image of him, spookily so. What year did Emmerdale start? |

1972
Funny how it was a regional afternoon soap to start with, then a national one, then the episode count increased, THEN it was moved to primetime, and THEN it became something quite different and gained viewers and now it's arugably at its best and popular period.. Has any soap had as much of an evolution as that? lol |

Coronation St is thought of as being the Granddaddy of soap but Emmerdale really isn't that far behind is it??? Sorry, stating the obvious! |

Shelia Mercier did release a book - called Annie's Song! I guess it's in the same bargain bucket as Betty Driver's "Betty" and Gillian Taylforth's "Kathy & Me" book now!
Personally, Annie was and will remain my alltime favourite Emmerdale Character - from day one, lots of history, pillar of the community and mother figure to all. I don't watch Emmerdale anymore (500 times a week was too much for me!) but I ask my family often if Annie is ever mentioned - sadly I hear she ain't - they should do - especially at this time of year - for Gawd sake Jack is her son and those two lads are her Grandsons (well the one is) As for Amos - I think the actor who played him had a stroke in real life, making his speech slow so he will never return - imagine the shock they would get if they saw the Emmerdale of today

Sheila Mercier often comments about how Emmerdale has changed...she did go to the 30th anniversary party and give some comments there.

It started in 1972 in an afternoon slot as daytime tv had just been introduced and creator Kevin Laffan was asked to come up with a 13 week run of episodSe that was extended to 26 weeks. It went off the air for a few months in 73 and then came back on as a permanent fixture moving to an evening slot in late 70s. It became just Emmerdale in 89 to reflect the change in direction and Phil Whatshisname from Brookside was at the helm in the early 90s and gave us the plane crash story. Did you know that the day after the plane crash episode (new years eve 93) Mick Johnson in Brookside was seen reading a paper with the headline about a plane crash in Yorkshire- an in joke perhaps!
Annie left in 94 and I believe she and Amos married in Spain off screen. I thought she was going to come back to tell Jack she was dying last year ? Her screen daughter Peggy Skilbeck died in childbirth in 1973- I think the actress was well known and didn’t want to be typecast as the soap was given a permanent run. I often hear that Ken Barlow and Ena Sharples were only meant to be short tem characters that stayed the long haul.Bill Roache said if he had known in 1960 he would be there 40 something years later he never would have taken it.So perhaps she thought the same. Peggy’s unfortunate twins were later killed with their aunt when their car stalled at a level crossing and was hit by a train…… And the first death took place in early 1973 when a young woman who was a distant relative of the Sugdens was raped and murdered. So much for afternoon entertainment. The actress who played her later played Rosa Di Marco years later in EE. |

in the evening in the 70's? In London I dont think that was the case, I remember staying off school to help my cat deliver her kittens in the early 80's and Emerdale was on in the background in the afternoon. The characters had built a guy which looked like Seth for fireworks night.

It would be nice if some of the older characters popped back like Sandie and Matt Skilbeck, even Dolly. Surely they would keep in touch with Jack. That's the trouble with soap, once they leave, that's it! Gone and forgotten mostly.

I have found this discussion really interesting and its amazing how the show successfully managed to reinvent itself. So many other shows/soaps have failed in doing this but Emmerdale really came back fighting. Its like they have wiped out all its history but needed to do that to survive whereas in other soaps the history is the important life blood of the show.
When you mention all these past characters who are never mentioned , its like that was another show and it has n consequence on the here and now. Whereas in Corrie can you see things which are a consequence of gradual change over the years. Crossroads is a show which made so many attempts to reinvent itself from sacking Noel Gordon, changeing ownership of the motel and then its newer format bringing in new owners again in a Dynasty type fashion. I think what made Emmerdale different was the fact it had never been a major success so there wasnt any expectations from the audience. |

I've one; didn't the Sugdens originally live in what is now the Dingle family abode?

Some of the issues Emmerdale tackled back then, seem really odd for a soap that was on during the afternoon.
