I consider this very ignornant and impolite and it implies he has little respect for other people.

He never looks clean, I'd love to dunk him in a bath and give him a good scrub and, no matter what he wears, he always looks scruffy. Not that that has any bearing on his singing ability, you understand.

I'm not a James fan but people like you, OP, really annoy me. Who are you to dictate the expressions people have on their face? You are also extremely ignorant as you haven't seemed to consider that his "rudeness" could be shyness. It's obvious the op has misread James. What you see is not rudeness but self-consciousness. He said himself he is not used to receiving praise and compliments and doesn't know how to react to them. He is now coming out of himself and beginning to feel comfortable in his own skin.
