Could Simon return if they dropped the mentoring side of the show
As Bosses want him to star again but his US diary makes that tricky.
A source on the Show said that could be fixed by dropping the mentoring aspect — leaving Cowell with just a judging role and allowing him to fly back and forth. They said it would also make evictions more tense, adding: “Judges always vote to save their own acts.” To Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...#ixzz2EdU0OjYe |

He was known for hardly mentoring his acts when he did appear in the UK version. Typically he would dictate song choice, then turn up on a Friday to see how rehearsals were going, once famously changing a song as late as Friday afternoon (Danyl). This arms length approach to mentoring is what led him to not know the names of a boy band he was mentoring either.
I don't think he's ever been much good as a mentor. So, whether he was just here on the night, or appeared as a hologram, I can't see it making much difference. One way of having Simon, and others back, is to have two judges per team, so the guest who accompanies the judge at judges houses continues in that co-role, and can stand in for the other judge on the live shows when required. Because the show is split over two nights these days each of the team's two judges could regularly appear for one night. This would bring more interest to the show, gives fans the judges they want to see again, and allow Simon the chance to appear some weeks for one night, with his co-judge acting as chief mentor the rest of the time. |

They can't drop it, that's one of the reasons X-Factor didn't get slapped with copying Pop Idol. Ditto for judges' votes.
