You've hit the nail on the head. I think James will have a good try and may try to resist doing what Simon wants him to do, but, at the end of the day, Simon (directly or indirectly) will be his employer and the contract will be too tight to let James have much control.
Another thread made the point that Jahmene is the real winner as his contract isn't already signed and he therefore has the option of negotiating what he wants to do, and I'd agree with that.
