Panny DMR-EX83EB wil not play 'NTSC' ?

A friend of ours 9in her late 70's!) recently bought a DVD player and HDD recorder: DMR-EX83EB I have lent her a couple of DVD's that play fine in all our players and other people's on the cover it says DVD NTSC Region 0 abd DVD-9, but when she puts it in the her DVD is days incompatible system? I copied the DVD onto a DVD-R and get the same result, the EX83 says it is both PAL and NTSC, but I thought it would auto switch like most other things? surely she does not have to go into the menu every time and select the PAL or NTSC option?
Thnx for any pointers you can give in this

Are you sure it's the DVD displaying the message and not the TV? There is a chance the DVD is outputting something but the TV doesn't like it. So you need to be sure which device is actually displaying the error message.

Also how is the DVD hooked up to the TV? I wonder if it is something weird going on with HDMI and it might work with SCART (or vice versa). So maybe try hooking it up with both and switch between the two to see if one plays OK and the other doesn't.

My Panasonic DVD / HDD recorder will only automatically switch to NTSC if there are no planned recordings set. Other than that I have to change it manually to NTSC and back again when finished.

This could be a possibility, but to start mucking around with her TV and DVD and usiing scart / hdmi will just confuse her more ! but thankyou for the pointer.

As I mentioned in an earlier post if there are recordings set in the planner then it does not allow auto switching to NTSC.
Try deleting the planned recordings and see what happens.

Alternatively see this from the Panasonic support section

Quote:
“UK standard DVD recorders use the PAL TV system but can also support NTSC recordings. So long as the DVD is not region coded to prevent playback NTSC discs can be played but the TV system must first be changed to NTSC.

Remedy

To set the TV system to replay NTSC recordings, you need to change the TV in the setup menu. Go into the following menus to change the setting:

Functions > To Others > Setup > Connections > TV System > set to NTSC > select “Yes“then press OK. Then Exit the menu.

The Recorder can now play NTSC DVDs but must be changed back to PAL before you can play PAL discs or PAL recordings on the Hard Disk Drive.”

Thanks peeps, the switching PAL-NT-PAL is not an option, she would never get the hang of that! will tell her about the planned recordings though

I Have seen this a few times and if you re set the unit back to shipping conditions ( Initialise ) and also re tune it then it will play the region 0 discs .

Bizarly this seems to crop up on some genuine UK sourced Daniel o, O'Donnell DVD's - no idea why but re initialize the machine and all is OK
