Making the dinner this year thought of something different for starters, maybe stuffed mushrooms, just wondered if anyone had tried different strarters and what they were?

I'm thinking about having smoked salmon and creme fraiche on blini for New Year's for a starter, will do a trial run first though

I'm doing the same as the last few years: Lobster with melted butter, cream, garlic and grated parmesan served with ricotta gnocchi and home baked bread (made in the oven not a bread maker!).

That sounds quite heavy for a starter, not sure we could eat that then have a big Christmas main, pudding and cheese board!!

We make a layered crab dish. Brown meat mixed with a little mayo, chilli and lemon, then white meat, then chopped hard boiled egg.

I did melon and parma ham with a drizzle of balsamic last year. Not to heavy for a starter, quite refreshing and very easy to prep

We have a crumpet each, with smoked salmon, scrambled egg and hollandaise sauce.

We always have smoked salmon. Last year I made blinis and put a dollop of sour cream on top, and a small bit of smoked salmon, and made a big platterful, and we had them as canapes while we were opening presents.

I make a terrine and we have slices of it on a bed of rocket leaves and dressing drizzled over. Or a simple melon and grape cocktail is refreshing and light.

Depends on what the main is. If your not having Yorkshire puddings with the main you could have some mini toad in the holes with red wine and onion gravy.

Also we often have 'Wexford mushrooms' all you need to do is fry some wild mushrooms off with garlic, add some gravy granules and cream....a massive spoonful of pepper. Serve on top of a crusty bruschetta and grill some Stilton cheese over the top...beautiful!

I like something light so melon and raspberrys drizzled with port or a rasperry coulis is ideal. But last year I decided to go retro and had prawn cocktail and it was lovely!.

We are having spicy potato cakes with sweet chilli sauce - not even tried them yet - just saw the recipe on BBC good food the other day!

Baked asparagus wrapped in parma ham with shaved parmesan is light and simple enough for me.

Pate, boursin soft cheese and lightly toasted baguette slices with a very small side salad, usually served in centre of table so people can have as much or little of either as they fancy!

Salad, Figs, parma ham and blue cheese - delicious!

In the past i have also bought brie and cranberry in filo and served with a little salad.

They are both just enough before you tuck into the main.

Roll mops: Slices of smoked salmon rolled round jumbo prawns with a prawn cocktail sauce drizzled over and served on a bed of rocket.

Asparagus and hollandaise.

One year my brother did something with chillies and redcurrant jelly. I can't remember what it was. I shall now be thinking about it all day.

I'm going to agree with the smoked salmon/blini or pate/melba toast type suggestions, with a bit of side salad. Easy to prepare and not too heavy.

I think this salmon with lemon and caper dressing looks special enough to serve on the big day.

Me too, easy to prepare leaving time to concentrate on the main course.

Smoked salmon terrine for us.
Salmon mousse at the bottom with smoked salmon flakes and smoked salmon on top.

Got it from Regal Fish.

In all the different places i've been on Christmas day i've never had a starter before Christmas dinner. With all the nibbles/chocolates that are on offer and having such a large meal starters are pretty much redundant.

Not much has changed during the course of the thread then?
